Jr. Specialist - Herbarium Management and Curation
Position description
The UC Davis Center for Plant Diversity in the Department of Plant Sciences is recruiting for a Junior Specialist with a background in herbarium management and curation to join our team starting July 1, 2017. General responsibilities involve curating scientific collections made by faculty, graduate students and staff and managing our collections, including evaluating insect control methods, climate control, and specimen preservation. The candidate will need to work with older hand-written field notes to create specimen labels using databases, georeference specimen locations using mapping programs, identify fresh and dried plant samples, use up to date scientific evidence to organize plant collections, communicate with our stakeholders, and plan and carry out outreach to the university community and the general public. The candidate will be expected to participate in field surveys within California, collect plant samples, create maps of species occurrences using GIS, assist with the writing of technical reports and other scientific publications and assist with presentations. The candidate may participate in documenting our type specimen collection, including imaging specimens, organizing collection data, and sending the data to a data aggregator. The candidate will be expected to make substantive scientific, scholarly, and intellectual contributions by evaluating the general methodological approaches being used, and to recommend alternative approaches where appropriate. The candidate will work a flexible schedule, as some duties may occur on weekends or evenings.
Qualifications:
B.S./B.A. in Life Sciences required; M.S./M.A. in Life Sciences or Museum Collection Management is preferred. Previous herbarium experience is required. Previous experience with plant taxonomy and knowledge of flowering plant families and genera is required. Proficiency with Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Access is required; experience with Dreamweaver and Arc GIS (or equivalent freeware) is preferred. Familiarity with world geography/place names is necessary. Experience with georeferencing specimens is necessary. Experience working with specimen imaging is preferred. All aspects of this position require great attention to detail and organizational skills. Good written and verbal communication skills are required. Good people skills are required; experience with outreach is preferred.
Term of Appointment: Full time for 1 year, with the possibility of extension. Salary: $19.18/hr
