Position description

The UC Davis Department of Plant Sciences has an opening for an Associate Specialist in Postharvest Biology within the Crisosto Lab Team. General responsibilities will include following experimental protocols designed by a research team consisting of faculty, graduate students and staff. The candidate will be expected to collect and analyze data, and make substantive scientific, scholarly, and intellectual contributions by evaluating the general methodological approaches being used, and to recommend alternative approaches where appropriate. The candidate will also be expected to independently review the scientific literature in this area in order to evaluate the scientific validity of the data analysis method being used and any model which may be proposed based on these data. The Associate Specialist will provide assistance on specific projects as well as provide general assistance to the laboratory team, as needed. Position will require work with various types of fruits, nuts, and vegetables, as well as travel to various locations in California. Position will involve conducting laboratory research and general laboratory duties with nuts, tree crops and berries in the Central Valley and Coastal Range of California. Responsibilities include postharvest fruit quality evaluations, laboratory analysis of samples, preparation of laboratory solutions, photography, data collection, statistical data analysis, graphical presentation of data, and computer management of data files.

Qualifications: Master’s or equivalent in Biology or related field. Applicant must have valid driver’s license and be available for weekend work and extended field trips that may include overnight stays. Must be able to lift 40 pounds. Applicant must be able to communicate proficiently in English. Good computer skills, particularly comfortable with Microsoft Office suite, and at least a basic knowledge of statistics also required.

Term: This is a limited position (1 year with the possibility of extending longer) to begin as soon as possible.

Salary: Starting at $53,933/yr (Commensurate with qualifications and experience.)
