The UC Davis Natural Reserve System (NRS) within the John Muir Institute of the Environment, an Organized Research Unit is recruiting for an Academic and Budget Coordinator for the Quail Ridge Reserve.

The reserve system manages property and provides facilitation for research, teaching, and public outreach at 39 sites throughout California. UC Davis NRS comprises approximately 20,000 acres and 11 employees and provides facilitation for research, teaching and public outreach from 7 schools and colleges at UC Davis and 10 other institutions of higher education from across North America.


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
The University of California, Davis, Natural Reserve System (NRS) manages five of the thirty-nine reserves that comprise the largest and most diverse set of university-owned and operated reserves in the world. These reserves include examples of nearly every major ecosystem in the state. They provide security sites for research, instructions, and public outreach. They enable monitoring of environment health, and provide a baseline for ecosystem restoration, in the context of California's rapidly growing population and the changing global environment.

The Academic Coordinator II will have the primary responsibilities for the budget for the five UCD natural reserves and the administration and programmatic development of the three UCD Natural Reserves: Jepson Prairie Reserve, Stebbins Cold Canyon Reserve, and Quail Ridge Reserve, working in conjunction with the UC Davis NRS Faculty Director, Associate Director, and administrative advisory committees. This position oversees the program, personnel, budget, and facilities for those three reserves.

The Academic Coordinator position has a high degree of independence and autonomy on a day-to-day basis and reports to the UC Davis NRS Faculty Director.


l. COORDINATION OF ACADEMIC PROGRAMS (85%)
A. Academic program planning and development
Under the general consultative direction for the UC Davis NRS Director, independently develops goals and programmatic initiatives, including establishing timetables, prioritizing tasks, and securing funding. Independently develops strategic, short-and long-term plans for reserve research, infrastructure, University-level teaching, and public outreach. Formulates and negotiates budgets with appropriate campus and systemwide entities in consultation with director. Works with unit analysis to create and revise rate and recharge rates. Pursues extramural funding to support programmatic goals and initiatives. Formulates strategic planning for all levels of reserve interface-individual reserves (local communities), UC Davis campus system (regional), NRS systemwide (state), and Organization of Biological Field Stations (national and global).


B. Assessment and evaluation of program
Administers the collection of data on reserve use for all the UC Davis Reserves, including grant funding, publications, research, class, and public use. Responsible for compiling programmatic reviews and annual reports for campus and NRS Systemwide. Frequently communicates with faculty and students to support and enhance their research and teaching efforts.


C. Research coordination and facilitation
Identifies and engages potential faculty reserve users. Describes resources of the UC Davis NRS, leads tours of biota and facilities identifies suitable research sites and offers logistical and infrastructural assistance. Coordinates and authorizes qualified research; reviews use applications for appropriateness and feasibility.
Facilitates research initiatives on reserves. Develops and oversees aspects of the research programs at the Quail Ridge, Stebbins Cold Canyon and Jepson Prairie Reserves, including the identification and pursuit of extramural funding for long-term environmental monitoring, data archiving, and research infrastructures. Develops and maintains scientific databases, and makes these accessible to researchers and instructors. Mentors undergraduate students gaining field experience at the Quail Ridge Reserve. Develops projects integrating biologists, computer scientists, and engineers using the technological infrastructure of the Quail Ridge Reserve.


D. Development of proposals for extramural funding of campus programs and identification of support resource
Pursues extramural funding opportunities to support programmatic goals and initiatives, including research, infrastructure, and outreach programs. Pursues cooperative land-use and management agreements with neighboring landowners as appropriate. Works with UC Davis and UC Systemwide Development to pursue targeted land acquisitions. Works with attorneys at UC NRS Office of General Counsel and Campus Counsel on the terms of conservation easements, use agreements, grant contracts, etc. to expand research opportunities for faculty and students.


E. Liaison representation with other agencies and institutions in the public and private sectors
Represents university interests in negotiations with the external partners (for individual reserves and the campus NRS), including state and federal agencies, non-profit groups and private organizations.


F. Supervision and leadership of staff volunteers, interns.
Supervises reserve staff, oversees volunteer recruitment and coordination, and advises interns at the Jepson Prairie Reserve, Stebbins Cold Canyon Reserve and Quail Ridge Reserve.


II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (10%)
Attends annual meetings of appropriate organizations including the Organization of Biological Field Stations and the UC NRS Management Workshop. Masters new computer skills as necessary including webpage creation and self-publishing programs, GIS, and other mapping systems, and novel technologies deployed on the reserves, such as bioacoustic monitoring systems and automated animal tracking technologies. Remains conversant with applicable scientific literature.


III. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5%)
Serves on campus and systemwide advisory committees, attends NRS meetings and workshops as appropriate and participates in professional development activities such as conferences on research and management.

SALARY RANGE: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.


TERM OF APPOINTMENT: 100% time. Work occasional evenings and weekends as necessary to meet operational needs. Ability to carry up to 50lbs of material, and/or equipment.
