Position description

The DePeters Nutrition Laboratory in the Department of Animal Science at the University of California, Davis is currently seeking a Junior Specialist, 100% time for duration of 12 months.
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Under the general direction of the Principal Investigator and senior staff members in the Department of Animal Science, the candidate will carry out animal experiments with livestock as well as conduct various laboratory methods related to feed analysis. General responsibilities include: laboratory support (maintaining lab, organizing lab, and lab supply ordering), animal trial support (setting up facilities, feeding animals, and collecting samples), and sample analysis (fiber analysis, in vitro gas production), and data management. The position will also be responsible for oversight of the rumen fistulated cows, which is basically once daily checking of each animal and recording oversight. The junior specialist will do some literature searches and assist in writing journal papers and popular articles. The junior specialist participate in discussions on research and the interpretation of research results. The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills, as well as the ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science or a related field with a minimum of 1 year experience working with livestock and/or laboratory work related to animal nutrition.
• Ability to organize supplies for laboratory and animal studies.
• Ability to maintain chemical inventories and laboratory safety data sheets.
• Ability to work with livestock (cattle, sheep, & goats) and general knowledge of on-farm management practices.
• Skills to provide on-farm data collection and laboratory assistance with proximate analysis for feed.
• Skills following research sampling protocol to handle and transport samples, and maintain records from sampling events and laboratory analyses.
• Knowledge and skills working with Microsoft suite (Excel, Access, Word, PowerPoint) for information outreach, data management and summation.
PREFERRED QULIFICATIONS (OPTIONAL):
• Nutrition and General Management background preferred.

SALARY RANGE: Step I - $36,894 [100% annual].

POSITION AVAILABLE/CLOSING DATE: As openings occur, appointments are made contingent upon availabilities of funding. The posting will remain open until filled. TERM OF APPOINTMENT: Short term, seasonal appointment based on the needs of the research project. Appointments may be made up to 100%.
