Position description

The Department of Plant Sciences at the University of California, Davis invites applications for a pool of qualified Junior Specialists in Plant Sciences or a related specialty should an opening arise. Screening of applicants is ongoing and will continue as needed. The number of positions varies each year, depending on the needs of the department.

This position will be involved in interdisciplinary studies focusing on question in plant sciences. Successful candidates will provide research support in a horticultural setting which includes interpretation of research results from data collection for academic publications/manuscripts. General responsibilities will include following experimental protocols designed by a research team consisting of faculty, graduate students and staff. The candidate will be expected to collect and analyze data, and make substantive scientific, scholarly, and intellectual contributions by evaluating the general methodological approaches being used, and to recommend alternative approaches where appropriate. The candidate will also be expected to independently review the scientific literature in this area in order to evaluate the scientific validity of the data analysis method being used and any model which may be proposed based on these data. Successful candidate will need to be able to travel between research sites and also transport materials, supplies, and plants. The candidate will carry out all physical functions related to the experimentation (handling plants, cleaning pots, weeding, etc). This will also include some lab activist such as weighting and measuring things related to the research. The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills; as well as the ability to work well independently and as part of a team.

Qualifications:

Bachelor degree in Plant Sciences or a related field. Soon to be graduating students may apply but must have Bachelor’s degree at start of appointment.

Preferred Qualification:
Previous lab, greenhouse, nursery or in-door plant growing experience in a University research group or internship involving research.

Term of Appointment: Short term, seasonal appointment based on the needs of the research project. Appointments may be made up to 100%.

Salary Range: Step I - $37,548 [100% annual] or Step II - $40,044 [100% annual]), commensurate with qualifications and experience.
