JUNIOR SPECIALIST POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT One Full-time Junior Specialist Position

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Dr. Kali Trzesniewski at the SELF lab, Department of Human Ecology, the University of California, Davis (http://www.selflab.org/) seeks to fill one full-time research assistant position at the Junior Specialist level starting in Summer, 2016. The appointment will involve working with a team of researchers on a collaborative Department of Education funded study investigating a Growth Mindset intervention (Brainology®) designed to boost motivation and achievement among adolescents in middle school. This position will be involved in interdisciplinary studies focusing on questions in education, human development and psychology. The successful candidate will participate in a field study evaluating the effectiveness of a Growth Mindset intervention delivered in middle schools. The position is ideally suited for a person who has a strong interest in experimental methodology in field settings, adolescents and youth development, and education. The position will allow the candidate to gain experience in applying psychological interventions to the study of real-world educational problems.

Duties and responsibilities may include:
• Participation in the coordination and evaluation components of the field experiment
• Preparation of research materials (some in our online survey platform, Qualtrics), managing data collection, coding data, assisting with data analysis, use of SPSS and Excel
• Recruiting local schools for pilot testing, and collaborating with the research team to carry out pilot testing at local schools;
• Responding to questions that may arise at school sites related to data collection and working with schools to acquire accurate class rosters and other information needed for evaluation of the Growth Mindset intervention
• Participation in reviewing literature and writing reports;
• Assisting with the recruiting, managing, coordinating and supporting undergraduate research assistants
• Assisting with IRB submissions and renewals, including human subject protocols, consent forms, and modifications;
• Discussion with other team members, including the project principal investigator, the project postdoctoral researcher, graduate students working on the project, and other collaborators, on research results and interpretation.
• Participation in the preparation of research presentations;
• Participation in appropriate professional/technical societies or groups and other educational and research organizations appropriate to the employee’s expertise.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Human Development, Education, or a related field.
• Experience or strong interest in experimental research methods in a field setting.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Demonstrated ability to work well in collaboration with others, and to exhibit autonomy and independence in handling various problem solving and administrative tasks
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, strong organizational skills, and keen attention to detail
• Experience with data collection, entry, and management of large databases
• Familiarity with and/or willingness to become proficient in statistical database packages such as SPSS & Excel as well as survey development packages such as Qualtrics
• Interest in and/or familiarity with research on Growth Mindset

SALARY RANGE: Step I - $36,984 [100% annual] or Step II - $39,444 [100% annual]), commensurate with qualifications and experience.
