Position description

The Department of Plant Sciences is recruiting for a Junior Specialist with background in horticulture and plant-water relations to join our team starting immediately. This is part of a project focused on plant/environment interactions, specifically on the water needs of almonds and the responses of almonds to deficit irrigation. The main experiment involves sensor installation, maintenance, calibration, and data collection for a large weighing lysimeter at the Kearny Agricultural Center (KAC) near Fresno, CA, and cooperation with faculty to evaluate the applicability of remote and local sensors for automated monitoring of plant water use and plant water status. The candidate must have experience in plant water relations methodology and with models of plant hydraulic architecture, as well as strong math and data organizing, processing, and analytical skills. The candidate will be expected to collect and analyze data, and make substantive scientific, scholarly, and intellectual contributions by evaluating the general methodological approaches being used, and to recommend alternative approaches where appropriate. The candidate will also be expected to independently review the scientific literature in this area in order to evaluate the scientific validity of the data analysis method being used and any model which may be proposed based on these data. This position will require periodic (approximately weekly) field trips to and in some cases overnight stay at the KAC (about 3 hour drive one way from Davis).

Qualifications:

B.S. degree in Plant Sciences, Biology, or closely related field, demonstrated interest and experience in plant water relations, ability to organize and process data (advanced Excel or programming experience). Must have a valid California driver license and be able to take field trips that will require overnight stays.

Term of Appointment: Part to full-time through 9/30/17. This position may be extended for up to 2 years depending on the availability of funding.

Salary: $36,984/yr (Pro-rated)
