Position description

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to assist in managing UC Davis Bodega Marine Laboratory’s (BML’s) white abalone captive breeding program.

White abalone (Haliotis sorenseni) was the first marine invertebrate to be listed as federally endangered in 2001. Captive breeding and outplanting were identified as crucial for saving the species from extinction. Though early efforts were hampered by disease, captive breeding success has increased tremendously, in part due to a healthy captive population. Now, more white abalone likely exist in captivity than in the wild. Further research is required to better understand white abalone reproductive conditioning and optimal culture methods to continue to increase captive breeding success and save the species through outplanting.

The successful candidate will join the white abalone captive breeding team at UC Davis BML.
This position will be involved in research aimed at the reproductive conditioning and culture of captive white abalone. The successful candidate will take a lead role caring for the captive broodstock and offspring and maintaining white abalone life support systems at BML, and will also participate in a team to help conduct spawning attempts across all facilities holding captive white abalone. The successful candidate will assist in the execution of research related to captive breeding success, such as reproductive conditioning, gamete quality assessment, and sperm cryopreservation. Opportunities also exist for performing public outreach about the program. The ideal candidate will have strong problem-solving, interpersonal, and communication skills, as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
