Position description

The Department of Plant Sciences is recruiting for a Seed Technologist in the Tomato Genetics Resource Center.

Position Details

  1. Seed request processing (50%). Coordinate processing of seed requests by communicating with external researchers, obtaining documentation such as import permits and phytosanitary certificates, verifying that seed requests are filled accurately, and entering seed request data in the TGRC database.

  2. Inventory seed collection (25%). Maintain an up to date inventory of seed packets and germination response data in the TGRC’s database. The inventoried seed include thousands of individual packets stored either in our ‘active’ or our ‘backup’ seed storage locations.

  3. Seed processing (15%). Help process fruit to extract seed, including seed cleaning, drying, packaging, counting and refiling seed packets. Split seed lots and prepare subsamples seed for backup storage in -18°C freezers by drying seed to the very low moisture levels and vacuum-sealing seed packets inside foil pouches. Prepare shipments for off-site backup storage at the USDA’s NCGRP facility and the Svalbard Global Seed Vault.

  4. Greenhouse and field work (10%). Carry out pollinations, seed sowing, transplanting, general plant care and sanitation, and fruit harvesting. Help supervise and train undergraduate student assistants, ensuring tasks are completed correctly and in a timely manner.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A B.S. degree in Genetics, Plant Biology, or a related field, plus experience in plant genetics, breeding or germplasm maintenance.
  • Experience with plant seed collection and preparation highly desired.
  • Previous lab work experience is required.
  • Previous experience with seed germination and packaging is
    required.
  • All aspects of this position require great attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Good written and verbal communication skills are required.

Term of Appointment: 50% for 12 months. The position may be extended for up to 2 years.
