Position description

Humanities Computing and Big Data. Rank is tenure track assistant or advanced assistant professor and the Ph.D. must be completed by September 19, 2016. The appointee is expected to have a strong research plan and teaching record. The appointee must be prepared to work in a collaborative research environment and to teach at both the undergraduate and graduate level.

Applicants should have evidence of distinction in research and teaching in humanities computing and large-scale quantitative or “big data” analysis of cultural archives. Applicants should demonstrate clear commitment to undergraduate education and the promise of excellent teaching at the graduate level. Evidence of excellence in scholarship is required.

Experience in working in a collaborative environment is desired. Applicants should have expertise in algorithmic development, data culture, data mining, and quantitative analysis of visual or textual materials. Specific domain application could be in any number of areas, from historical text
archives to game databases. Applicants should be able to teach a diverse range of courses on topics related to humanities computing and big data that incorporate digital-born modes of criticism with traditional humanities approaches. Applicants should be prepared to teach undergraduate and graduate courses for one or more of the following departments: English,
Science and Technology Studies, and Cinema and Digital Media. A Ph.D. in either literary studies, media studies, communication, art history, history, computer science or a related field with a strong emphasis on big data and digital humanities should be completed by time of appointment.

This recruitment is conducted at the assistant rank. The resulting hire will be at the assistant rank, regardless of the proposed appointee's qualifications. We strongly encourage candidates to complete the "Statement of Contributions to Diversity."
