SALARY: Dependent on qualifications and experience

QUALIFICATIONS: Veterinarian (DVM or equivalent) with advanced training in zoological companion animal medicine and surgery is required. Board certified or board eligible by the American College of Zoological Medicine (ACZM) required. Consideration will be extended to Diplomates of the European College of Zoological Medicine pending commitment to pursue ACZM certification. Clinical experience and competence in zoological companion animal medicine and surgery is required. Demonstrated aptitude/experience in teaching zoological companion animal medicine and surgery is required. The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere, and demonstrated (or potential) accomplishment in areas contributing to diversity an inclusion. RESPONSIBILITIES:
Clinical: The position includes a 70% clinical commitment to the Companion Avian and Exotic Animal Medicine and Surgery Service of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH). Individual will be responsible for directing, instructing, and supervising veterinary students and residents; providing medical and surgical service to birds (including backyard poultry), reptiles, amphibians, fish and small mammal patients in addition to small zoological collections; and advising and consulting with referring veterinarians and clients.
Teaching: The primary teaching responsibility will be direct daily supervision and clinical instruction of senior veterinary students rotating on the Companion Avian and Exotic Animal Medicine and Surgery Service. Other responsibilities include: 1) participation in lectures and laboratories in the DVM professional curriculum; 2) clinical teaching in the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH); and 3) participation in the graduate clinical (resident) training program of the VMTH.
Professional Competence: Will advance the discipline of zoological companion animal medicine within the VMTH, as well as locally and nationally, through participation and leadership in providing high quality patient care in the hospital environment. Expected to establish reputation for clinical excellence locally, regionally, and nationally, depending upon level of appointment. Expected to be ACZM board certified within 5 years from appointment. Must demonstrate clinical competence and be recognized for accomplishment in a focused area of clinical practice.
Creative Scholarship: Is expected to advance the clinical discipline through creation and dissemination of new knowledge with documentation in peer-reviewed publications. Creative/scholarly activities are required for individuals in this series, but in view of the increased responsibilities for clinical service and teaching, the type of scholarly activity may focus primarily on integrating/improving clinical care, conducting clinical research studies, and/or improving veterinary medical education.
Service: University and public service through committee work, participation in professional organizations, and other appropriate means is required. Active participation and engagement in developing/maintaining continuing education activities of the VMTH as it relates to companion avian and exotic animal medicine and surgery is required.
