NATURE AND PURPOSE
The Assistant Project Scientist (APS) makes significant and creative contributions to a research or creative project in his/her academic discipline. The appointee possesses the subject matter expertise and the creative energy necessary to function at a high level of competence. The appointee will participate in activities to increase, improve, or upgrade competency. Appointees with Project (e.g., Scientist) titles may engage in University and public service. Although the APS is expected to work independently under the general guidance of an academic member with an independent research program (i.e., Professor, Professional Researcher, Specialist in Cooperative Extension, etc), he/she is not required to develop an independent research program or reputation. He/she will carry out research or creative programs with supervision by an individual in an academic title that carries with it automatic Principal Investigator status. The APS does not usually serve as a Principal Investigator but may do so by exception.
The APS works in Genome Center Professor and Director Blake Meyers' lab, which focuses on plant genetics, genomics, and RNA biology. The APS will conduct wet lab and computational analyses of plant genomes and is expected to be an expert in plant molecular biology and bioinformatics.
I. RESEARCH IN SPECIALIZED AREAS (98% EFFORT)
Research activity (85%)
This position requires creative contributions to and collaborative development of a research program focused on plant genomics with particular emphasis on anther biology and pollen development in grasses, mainly in maize, and the roles of small RNAs in these pathways. The candidate will help to determine research goals in consultation with the Principal Investigator. The scope of the studies will include a range of molecular and computational approaches, as well as experience with maize genetics, developmental biology, and small RNAs. Familiarity with and application of advanced computer tools for genomic analysis and database use are required. This candidate will also provide leadership and collaboration with students and other laboratory co-workers.
The candidate will prepare and submit papers for publication in scientific peer-reviewed journals either independently or in collaboration with the PI or other members of the research team.
Grant Acquisition (3%)
Assist in writing proposals for extra mural funding.
II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (1% EFFORT)
The appointee will participate in appropriate professional/technical societies or groups and other educational and research organizations and review research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications related to area of expertise if asked to do so. The candidate will make presentations at national and international scientific meetings.
III. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (1% EFFORT)
The candidate may maintain liaison and respond to the needs of various industry organizations, state and federal agencies and other external groups on issues related to the area of expertise.
- Ph.D. in relevant field as well as postdoctoral and mentorship experience.
- Expert in plant molecular biology and bioinformatics.
- Experience with maize genetics, including nursery management.
- Experience with plant reproductive biology.
- Experience with RNA biology and methods for their study.
- A strong record of publications in peer-reviewed journals.
