Position overview

Salary range: “Off-scale salaries” and other components of pay, i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions, qualifications, and experience. A reasonable estimated salary range for this position is $90,500-$118,000,
inclusive of the salary scale and off-scale salary components.

Position description

The Classics Program at the University of California, Davis invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position, beginning July 1, 2024. Rank is Assistant Professor with a starting salary range of $90,500 to $118,000, commensurate with qualifications and expertise.

Applicants’ research interests should focus on Ancient Mediterranean culture(s) outside of Europe (e.g., Ancient Egypt, North Africa, the Levant). We are particularly interested in candidates whose research and teaching reorient traditional disciplinary boundaries, for instance by engaging with cross-cultural encounters within the Ancient Mediterranean world. The applicant’s field of research should complement the existing strengths of the program’s faculty.

Applicants must demonstrate exceptional promise as scholars and teachers. They should have a strong research plan, a clear commitment to undergraduate education, and the ability to participate actively in the running of a small department. We particularly welcome candidates with demonstrated interest in improving access to the study of the Ancient Mediterranean for marginalized students. The successful candidate will work to expand course offerings at the undergraduate level and will take on a leadership role in the teaching of a large undergraduate lecture course. Teaching load is four courses per year, on the quarter system. Ph.D. in relevant field must be in hand before the first day of classes, September 25, 2024.
