Position description
The School of Education (SOE) at the University of California, Davis invites applications for a position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in the area of mathematics education. Mathematics is a core discipline in educational institutions of all kinds, and mathematical understanding is a critical component in life, education, civic participation, and career. Mathematics also serves as a powerful gatekeeper for other valued educational and career pathways. Access to high-quality mathematics learning opportunities, however, is too scarce for all students, especially for students marginalized along dimensions of racial and ethnic background, gender, socioeconomic resources, and regional setting. Despite tremendous advances in recent years, we still have much to learn about the nature of mathematical learning and development, how to design effective mathematics learning environments, how best to prepare mathematics teachers, and to pursue all of these goals in ways that address and rectify long-standing patterns of injustice in education.
We seek a scholar committed to research that provides new and transformative understandings and solutions to persistent challenges within K12 mathematics education.
Responsibilities: Conducting and maintaining a productive program of research with the aims of advancing knowledge of mathematics education; seeking extramural support for research and graduate student support; teaching education courses in the graduate, undergraduate, and teacher credentialing programs; and serving on school and university committees.
The School of Education at the University of California, Davis offers five Ph.D. program areas including Language, Literacy, and Culture; Learning and Mind Sciences, Mathematics Education, Science and Agricultural Education, and School Organization and Educational Policy. In addition, we are home to two professional programs, the Teacher Education Credential and MA program and the Capital Area North Doctorate in Educational Leadership (CANDEL) EdD program, six centers, and various research projects.
At UC Davis, a Work Life program has been in place since January 2003. A group of Faculty Advisors for Work Life was established in 2007 to help publicize and inform the faculty about the programs, policies, and resources associated with work life/life changes. This group of advisors represents various academic units (colleges, schools, divisions) on the campus. The following summarizes the programs and updated UC policy (http://academicaffairs.ucdavis.edu/programs/work-life/index.html ).
The UC Davis Partner Opportunities Program (POP) is a service designed to support departments and dean offices in the recruitment and retention of outstanding faculty. Eligibility is limited to full-time Academic Senate Ladder Rank faculty, Cooperative Extension Specialists, and in a few instances, members of the Senior Management Group
(http://academicaffairs.ucdavis.edu/programs/partneropp/ index.html).
For questions regarding how these policies/programs affect academic appointees, contact: Brad Horton, Director of Faculty Relations and Development, at (530) 752-7643.
The University of California is committed to creating and maintaining a community dedicated to the advancement, application, and transmission of knowledge and creative endeavors through academic excellence, where all individuals who participate in University programs and activities can work and learn together in a safe and secure environment, free of violence, harassment, discrimination, exploitation, or intimidation. With this commitment, UC Davis conducts a reference check on all first-choice candidates for Academic Senate Assistant Professor, Steps 4, 5, or 6 through Professor, Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment, Steps 4, 5, or 6 through Senior Lecturer with Security of Employment, and Acting Professor of Law through Professor of Law positions. The reference check involves contacting the administration of the applicant’s previous institution(s) to ask whether there have been substantiated findings of misconduct that would violate the University’s Faculty Code of Conduct. To implement this process, UC Davis requires all applicants for any open search for these faculty positions to complete, sign, and upload the form entitled “Authorization to Release Information” into RECRUIT as part of their application. If an applicant does not include the signed authorization with the application materials, the application will be considered incomplete, and as with any incomplete application, will not receive further consideration. Although all applicants for faculty recruitment must complete the entire application, only finalists considered for these faculty positions will be subject to reference checks.
All applicants for these searches will be asked to sign and upload an “Authorization to Release Information” form into UC RECRUIT. If the candidate does not include the signed authorization with the application materials in UC RECRUIT, the application will be incomplete and, as with any incomplete application, will not receive further consideration.
When the selection of the first choice candidate has been made, the Dean and/or Department Chair should contact Academic Affairs (vpaa_apteam@ucdavis.edu) to initiate the reference check process through email with the attached completed/signed release from the candidate, and current curriculum vitae (CV). Note, for an appointment at the Assistant Professor or Lecturer with Potential Security of Employment level, the proposed step (4, 5, or 6) needs to be included. Academic Affairs shall contact the academic personnel office (or equivalent) at one or more of the previous institutions where the candidate has been employed. This may occur concurrently with the negotiation of the terms in the Tentative Offer Letter (TOL); however, the reference check must be cleared before finalizing and having the candidate sign the TOL.
