Position description

The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME), in the College of Engineering at UC Davis, invites candidates for a tenure-track/tenured Assistant or Associate Professor in Optical Spectroscopy and Imaging faculty position. The resulting hire will not be made above the associate rank, regardless of the proposed appointee's qualifications.

Candidates should have an existing track record in Biophotonics, specifically in Optical Spectroscopy and Imaging, and be open to collaborative studies with faculty and scientists at the UC Davis Medical Center, as well as the newly established National Center for Interventional Biophotonic Technologies funded by the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering. The expectation will be to build an internationally successful and interdisciplinary research program, be active in acquiring extramural funding, participate in teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels, and be willing to help establish an innovative multi-disciplinary curriculum in the field of medical Biophotonics.

To be considered for an appointment at the Associate Professor rank, candidates should have a commensurate record of scholarly accomplishments, teaching experience, and a sustained externally funded research program. Preference will be given to candidates that can demonstrate a commitment to collaboration in their previous research program, in particular with clinical departments and the medical imaging community.

We are particularly interested in candidates who can demonstrate a history of successful, team-based research, interaction with faculty, students, and other scientists from diverse backgrounds. In addition, the research program of successful candidates is expected to integrate various campus strengths (e.g., of the School of Medicine, the School of Veterinary Medicine, UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center, Center for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Research).

For reference, the listed salary range is for an academic year (9-month) appointment.

The successful candidate will demonstrate an understanding of the barriers preventing full participation of members from historically underrepresented and marginalized student communities in higher education. The Department of Biomedical Engineering is committed to building an excellent, diverse, and inclusive faculty, staff, and student body. The department has existing strengths in the areas of tissue engineering/regenerative medicine, cellular and molecular engineering, biomechanics, biomedical imaging, micro/nano systems, therapeutics, and computational/systems biology. The department is also highly engaged in the campus Aggie Square innovation initiative, located at the UC Davis Sacramento campus, including the development of new undergraduate and graduate focused education programs.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent in Engineering (e.g. Biomedical, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science), Physics, or other related discipline, or have advanced to candidacy in an above or other related discipline.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. or equivalent in Engineering (e.g. Biomedical, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science), Physics, or other related discipline by date of hire.

Preferred qualifications (other preferred, but not required, qualifications for the position)

Excellence in research that complements or extends existing research strengths in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and at the institution as a whole, and has the potential to attract extramural funding.

Evidence of commitment to or strong potential for commitment to the advancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion for historically underrepresented and marginalized student communities, and how this commitment integrates with teaching, research, and service.

Commitment to excellence in teaching. Must demonstrate evidence of ability to perform well at both graduate and undergraduate levels and to develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses or seminars.
