Junior Specialist - Wan Lab
NATURE AND PURPOSE
This position provides research support to the laboratory of Dr. Yu-Jui Yvonne Wan in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. This Junior Specialist position will conduct research on diet-related metabolic health problems using mouse models. This position will be involved in interdisciplinary studies focusing on questions in molecular and cellular biology, bioinformatics or immunology as related to metabolic diseases and cancer.
The position of Junior Specialist has a narrow focus in a specialized area and provides technical or specialized expertise (e.g., with instrumentation and research equipment, or with research methods) in the planning and execution of a research project. Junior Specialists are required to be actively and significantly involved in publishable research activities, including reviewing journal articles and engaging in discussions on research and the interpretation of research results. Junior Specialists are also expected to participate in appropriate professional/technical societies or groups and other educational and research organizations as well as review research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications as applicable related to their research area of expertise.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DESIGNATED AREAS OF EXPERTISE
I. RESEARCH IN SPECIALIZED AREAS (80% EFFORT)
A. Work under the direction of the Principle Investigator or senior laboratory personnel on design, activities, analysis and presentation of research projects. Collaborate with personnel affiliated with research activities involving immunoassays (e.g., western blots, ELISA, multiplex assays), gene cloning, extracting RNA, DNA and protein from cell lines and tissue, conducting standard assays such as PCR, culturing mammalian cell lines, preparing samples for genomic analysis, and other such laboratory duties as may arise. Participate in and present research results, either short oral presentation or a poster presentation in scientific meetings. Organize and summarize final data in graphical and/or tabular form for publications, grant proposals, and publications. Participate in the writing of research results for publication by writing sections of the manuscript and helping edit the manuscript. Junior Specialist will have opportunities for co-authorship or acknowledgement in publications.
Additional responsibilities include keeping track of laboratory supplies, maintaining a database of all laboratory supplies and purchases, and maintaining detailed inventory and freezer logs of laboratory reagents/materials. The candidate will follow standard operating procedures and maintain a clean and orderly working environment in the laboratory and will help or aid other lab members in the performance of their work.
II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (15% EFFORT)
• The incumbent will have opportunities to develop presentation abilities in laboratory meetings and the departmental meeting and other on-campus events.
• The incumbent will be encouraged to research and summarize appropriate literature and discuss during laboratory meetings.
• The incumbent will be encouraged to have membership with appropriate societies and participate in appropriate meetings and groups on-campus.
III. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5% EFFORT)
• May maintain liaison and respond to the needs of various industry organizations, state and federal agencies, and other external groups on issues related to area of expertise.
• Mentorship of undergraduate students including summer interns in the Dept. of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, as well as rotating biomedical students.

Term of Appointment: One year with possibility to extend to two maximum, based on the needs of the research project. 100% Appointment.

• Bachelor's degree in biological sciences or a related field with previous laboratory course experience.
• Basic level understanding of Biological Sciences
• Demonstrated proficiency with bench science activities, including but not limited to pipetting, dilution preparation, specimen handling, accurate measuring of chemicals, etc.
• Willing to work with biohazardous materials and biologicals. Understanding of University procedures and policies for working with biohazards, chemicals, and their disposal.
• Ability to abide by safety regulations. Able to safely work with chemicals, tissue fixatives, dry ice, and liquid nitrogen
• Timely responses to emails and voicemail messages.
• Attentive and reliable with various modes of communication (email, calls, texts, etc.)
• Good interpersonal skills and be capable of working with a variety of personalities
• Previous experience in the use of mouse models (necroscopy, serum, urine, fecal, organ sampling, etc.)
• Knowledge of metabolism, cancer or neuroscience
• Ability to communicate professionally and effectively with coworkers with a wide range of professional backgrounds
• Flexible to changing demands of research tasks
• Professional approach to work and attention to detail
• Enthusiastic in learning new lab skills
