Overview of Position

The Library of the University of California, Davis, seeks a creative, collaborative, and enterprising librarian to lead the Blaisdell Medical Library (“BML”), the university’s biomedical library located in Sacramento, California. The Head of BML will lead the strategy and operations for BML, and work closely with health sciences professional students, residents and fellows, clinical and teaching faculty and staff, and institutional stakeholders in a diverse academic health sciences environment. Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Research & Learning, the Head of BML will provide strategic and collaborative leadership of BML, plan for BML operations and services that reflect the needs of the UC Davis health sciences community, and create and strengthen dynamic partnerships with academic and administrative units to advance the university’s research, teaching, clinical, and public outreach initiatives.

Position Responsibilities

Under the general supervision of the Associate University Librarian for Research & Learning, the Head of BML will:

  • Provide inspired leadership and direction for enhancing and evolving the operations, user-centered services, and collections of BML.

  • Directly and indirectly supervise (including hiring, training, development, and evaluation) BML personnel, and engage, coordinate, and collaborate with colleagues across the UC Davis Library.

  • As the operational head of BML, perform administrative duties such as hiring and managing personnel, training and development, preparing letters of evaluation, and making work assignments; formulating policies and procedures; developing appropriate programs and services; overseeing equipment, software, and facilities; monitoring budget expenditures; maintaining statistics and preparing annual reports; and interpreting library and university policies and procedures.

  • Work in partnership with colleagues in the library, across campus, and at other institutions to play a guiding role in initiatives that support the current and future research needs of UC Davis researchers, while minding and incorporating current trends related to research, data, and scholarly communication in the health sciences

  • Work in partnership with colleagues in the library and across campus to play a guiding role in initiatives that support the current and future educational needs of the health sciences professional schools and programs on the Sacramento campus (e.g., UC Davis School of Medicine, Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing).

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and BML staff to assess strengths, impacts, and areas of opportunity in services, and determine priorities and innovations that align with the academic mission of the university.

  • Manage outreach and engagement activities, including planning and development of new opportunities, for BML.

  • Lead or participate in cross-functional or interdepartmental teams across the library, campus, or other universities of the University of California.

  • Work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively to promote teamwork, diversity, equity, and inclusiveness within the UC Davis Library and on campus.

  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned

  • As an academic appointee engages actively in pertinent ongoing research, scholarship, or creative activity and/or teaching

Salary and Benefits

Rank and salary: Associate Librarian, Salary Point 6, $77,150 to Librarian, Salary Point 10, $115,054. (Appointment rank and salary based on qualifications and experience.)

This position is not covered by a collective bargaining agreement.

Benefits: The University of California is one of the largest employers in California, and offers outstanding health and retirement benefits to its employees and their families. Librarians are academic appointees and earn 24 days of vacation and 12 days of sick leave per year. In addition, there are 13 university holidays.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
  • Graduate degree in library, information, or data science from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent

  • Five (5) or more years of experience exercising progressively more demanding management and supervisory skills in health sciences librarianship or equivalent practical experience

  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively with multiple constituencies in a complex environment

  • Demonstrated familiarity with health science information resources and best practices in resource management activities in an academic, clinical, or research library

  • Demonstrated understanding of integrating library support of curricula across the range of health sciences educational programs (e.g., undergraduate and graduate medical education, nursing education, continuing medical and nursing education, health professions education, etc.)

  • Demonstrated understanding of basic and clinical sciences research processes and trends, with emphasis on biomedical informatics and/or data science

  • Demonstrated analytic, problem-solving, and communication skills

  • Knowledge of assessment and evaluation theories and practices

  • Demonstrated commitment to professional development. Record of accomplishment in research, scholarship, or creative activity and/or teaching consonant with an academic appointment.

  • Ability to meet the University of California criteria for advancement and promotion within the Librarian Series.

Preferred qualifications (other preferred, but not required, qualifications for the position)
  • Two (2) years of work experience as a science or health sciences librarian, informaticist, or health educator

  • Knowledge of scholarly communication issues, tools, and resources

  • Demonstrated commitment to improving user experience

  • Demonstrated knowledge and use of best practices in developing and delivering services in a hybrid work environment with interdisciplinary teams

  • Evidence of ability to work collaboratively with library colleagues and partners within the library and across the campus

  • Evidence of commitment to fostering an inclusive environment
