Junior Specialist **
**Fereidouni Lab


This position provides research support to the laboratory of Dr. Farzad Fereidouni in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. As a Junior Specialist, you will assist with design, fabrication, and validation of novel imaging devices for tissue diagnosis which hold a great potential for clinical translation and commercialization. We are looking for an individual with analytical and detail-oriented approach who holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or similar fields and is looking for challenges bridging the disciplines of Engineering and health care as part of professional development. It is essential to have a constant desire to learn and grow, a strong communication ability, and the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment in order to be successful. This is a unique opportunity for being involved in a translational technology and learn from multidisciplinary group involved with our research.
The position of Junior Specialist has a narrow focus in a specialized area and provides technical or specialized expertise (e.g., with instrumentation and research equipment, or with research methods) in the planning and execution of a research project. Junior Specialists are required to be actively and significantly involved in publishable research activities, including reviewing journal articles and engaging in discussions on research and the interpretation of research results. Junior Specialists are also expected to participate in appropriate professional/technical societies or groups and other educational and research organizations as well as review research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications as applicable related to their research area of expertise.


A. Plan, conduct, analyze, and present research projects under the direction of the Principal Investigator. Contribute to design, test and validation of imaging and tissue preparation devices. This includes but not limited to mechanical design of the setups, assisting with creating novel approaches for imaging and detection of tissues, assisting with innovative software development and image acquisition tasks, participate in preparing samples for imaging and analysis and performing other such laboratory activities. Take part in scientific meetings and present research results. Prepare data for publications, grant proposals, and presentations. Contribute to the writing and editing of research results for publication by writing sections of the manuscript. There will be opportunities for junior specialists to co-author or acknowledge publications.
Additional responsibilities include keeping track of laboratory supplies, maintaining a database of all images and purchases, and maintaining detailed inventory of laboratory reagents/materials. It will be the candidate's responsibility to follow standard operating procedures, maintain a clean and orderly working environment, and assist other lab members.
• The incumbent will have opportunities to develop presentation abilities in laboratory meetings and departmental meeting and other on-campus events.
• The incumbent will be encouraged to research and summarize appropriate literature and discuss it during laboratory meetings.
• The incumbent will be encouraged to have a membership with appropriate societies and participate in appropriate meetings and groups on campus.
• Providing assistance to the principal investigator in preparing progress and final reports, publishing research results, and writing proposals.
• Student mentoring, including summer interns and rotating graduate students in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.

Number of Positions Available: 1

Term of Appointment: One year with the possibility to extend to two maximum, based on the needs of the research project. 100% Appointment.

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or related field, experience with systems design, integration, and testing. This will include creating testbeds for tissue preparation, staining, detection, imaging and final processing.
• Knowledge of robotics and machine vision
• Experience with programming environments such as C#, MATLAB or python.
• Knowledge of image processing.
• Ability to communicate professionally and effectively with coworkers with a wide range of professional backgrounds.
• Flexible to changing demands of research tasks.
• Enthusiastic in learning new lab skills.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

• Knowledge of machine learning (PyTorch, TensorFlow).
• Familiarity with AutoCAD or similar platforms
