Salary range: A reasonable estimate for this position is $49,000 at Step 1 or $52,000 at Step 2

Position description

In direct collaboration with the Principal Investigator(s), this position is part of the Rosetta Research and Mentoring Postbaccalaureate program, and will involve ongoing plant and food science enzyme engineering research directed to fulfilling the mission of the Siegel Lab.

As part of the NSF RaMP program, the Postbaccalaureate participant will work 75% time/effort in this Junior Specialist research position. It's expected the candidate will dedicate the remaining 25% time to training and professional development outside the scope of technical research work as structured in the program mentorship activities.

Research (80%)

The candidate will specifically participate in the testing of novel molecular protein designs for oligomeric rubisco prototypes. As a member of the research team, work will include computational protein modeling and design, molecular mutagenesis and cloning, protein expression/induction in E.coli systems , protein size and bead based chromatography, analytical chemistry-based functional assays.

The candidate will prepare documentation and reports for publications, in collaboration with her/his direct supervisor. Manuscript preparation by the candidate will include reviewing the relevant literature and summarizing these reviews in the introduction, describing results and methods used to acquire the results, presenting and analyzing data obtained by the candidate, constructing clear and informative figures, interpreting the results and discussing how they fit in the current understanding of the field.

Professional Competence (10%)

The Junior Specialist will have opportunities to present research findings to a larger audience at scientific conferences or meetings as funded through the RaMP program. The candidate may also assist the investigator in presenting progress reports and final summaries to granting agencies.

University and Public Service (10%)

The Junior Specialist will participate in training activities, such as mentoring undergraduate students. They will actively contribute to lab activities via meetings and unit/campus presentations.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
  1. Baccalaureate degree in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Computer Science, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Biology, or related field.
  2. Experience in extraction, purification and manipulation of nucleic acids from bacteria and eukaryotes.
  3. Competence in basic computational tasks, such as DNA sequence analysis, molecular visualization protein structural analysis.
  4. Experience in protein characterization, such SDS-PAGE.
  5. Experience coding/scripting in Python.
  6. Good quantitative skills.
  7. Experience in column-based protein purification preferred.
