Position description

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Clinical: The position includes a 50% (tenure track), 70% (Professor of Clinical track) or 90% (Health Sciences Clinical track) clinical effort to the Small Animal Soft Tissue Surgery Service of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH). Estimated annual clinical effort assignments for Tenure, Professor of Clinical and Health Sciences Clinical Professor tracks are 20, 29 and 38 weeks (typically M-Th or Tu-F) respectively and up to 10 weeks/year on call, with on call weeks currently served concurrently with clinic weeks. On call time could be increased and daytime duty adjusted accordingly based on the interests of the candidate. Individual will be responsible for directing, instructing and supervising veterinary students and residents; providing health care and service to in-house and referral patients; and advising and consulting with referring veterinarians and clients.
Teaching: Responsibilities include: 1) participation in lectures and laboratories in the DVM professional curriculum; 2) clinical teaching in the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH); 3) participation in the graduate clinical (resident) training program of the VMTH; and 4) participation in the graduate academic programs (MS and PhD) of the campus if applicable.
Professional Competence: Advance the discipline within the VMTH, as well as locally and nationally, through participation and leadership in providing high quality patient care in the hospital environment. Expected to establish reputation for clinical excellence locally, regionally, and nationally, depending upon level of appointment. Must demonstrate clinical competence and over a career become recognized for achievement in a focused area of clinical practice.
Creative Scholarship: Faculty in the tenure and Professor of Clinical tracks are expected to advance the discipline through creation and dissemination of new knowledge with documentation in peer-reviewed publications. The development of a creative, focused, and productive basic and/or clinically-oriented research program is a fundamental and indispensable requirement of the tenure track position. Individual will provide leadership in directing research projects of veterinary students, residents, and graduate students. Creative/scholarly activities are required for individuals in the Professor of Clinical track position, but in view of the increased responsibilities for clinical service and teaching, the type of scholarly activity may focus primarily on integrating/improving clinical care, conducting clinical research studies, and/or improving veterinary medical education.
Although creative scholarship is an expectation for the Health Sciences Clinical Professor track, it is typically derived from clinical teaching and professional service activities. Examples of activities qualifying as creative scholarship in this track include participation in the advancement of professional education; publication of case reports or clinical reviews; development of or contributions to administration (supervision) of a clinical service; or development of or contributions to clinical guidelines or pathways.
Service: University and public service through committee work, participation in professional organizations, continuing education, and other appropriate means is required.
The salary range for this position is $154,800 –$208,700. “Off-scale salaries” and other components of pay (i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step) are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions, qualifications, and experience.
