POSITION AVAILABLE: Assistant or Associate Professor of Clinical Equine Internal Medicine
SALARY: The current base pay range is $154,800 – $202,600. Other components of pay may be offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions, qualifications, and experience.
QUALIFICATIONS: Veterinarian (DVM or equivalent) with advanced training in equine internal medicine is required. Board certification or credentials accepted by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (large animal) or the European College of Equine Internal Medicine is required. Clinical experience and competence in general equine internal medicine is required. Demonstrated aptitude/experience in teaching equine internal medicine is required. Documented research/scholarly record is preferred or a demonstrated potential to develop collaborative or independent focused creative scholarship in equine internal medicine is required. Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere. A valid license to practice veterinary medicine in California is required before employment (California Business and Professions Code Section 4846-4857). Individuals not eligible for a full California license can obtain a University License (California Business and Professions Code Section 4848.1).
Clinical: The position includes a 70% clinical commitment to the Equine Medicine Service of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH). Individual will be responsible for directing, instructing, and supervising veterinary students and residents; providing medical services to equine patients; providing after-hours emergency medical services to equine patients and supporting house-staff in emergency after hours duties; and advising and consulting with referring veterinarians and clients.
Teaching: The primary teaching responsibility will be direct daily supervision and clinical instruction of senior veterinary students rotating on the Equine Medicine Service. Other responsibilities include: 1) participation in lectures, laboratories, and other educational activities in the DVM professional curriculum; 2) clinical teaching in the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH); and 3) participation in the graduate clinical (resident) training program of the VMTH.
Professional Competence: Will advance the discipline of equine internal medicine within the VMTH, as well as locally and nationally, through participation and leadership in providing high quality patient care in the hospital environment. Expected to establish reputation for clinical excellence locally, regionally, and nationally, depending upon level of appointment. Must demonstrate clinical competence and be recognized for accomplishment in clinical equine internal medicine.
Creative Scholarship: Is expected to advance the clinical discipline through creation and dissemination of new knowledge with documentation in peer-reviewed publications. Creative/scholarly activities are required for individuals in this series, but in view of the increased responsibilities for clinical service and teaching, the type of scholarly activity may focus primarily on integrating/improving clinical care, conducting clinical research studies, and/or improving veterinary medical education.
Service: University and public service through committee work, participation in professional organizations, and other appropriate means are required. Active participation and engagement in developing/maintaining continuing education activities of the VMTH as it relates to equine medicine are required.
