Position description
Computational Biologist
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at UC Davis Health, Loots Lab, has an opening for a computational biologist to participate in biomedical research to work in the area of musculoskeletal and cancer biology. The position will serve in the Specialist series with a Junior or Assistant rank. The candidate will work in a highly integrated environment as part of a multi-disciplinary team to develop new algorithms and methods, and analyze large scale gene and protein expression data in the context of several models of human diseases such as cancer, post-traumatic osteoarthritis and osteoporosis.
The position will work under the direction of Dr. Gabriela Loots in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.
This recruitment is conducted at the Junior or Assistant rank. The resulting hire will be at the Junior or Assistant rank, regardless of the proposed appointee's qualifications.
Essential Duties
- Design and implement methods to analyze large-scale data, including bulk RNA-seq and single-cell/spatial transcriptomic data, CHIP-seq and proteomics data, and perform integrative functional analysis
- Generate novel pipelines for the analysis of complex data
- Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design, and execution of research to address defined problems.
- Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment and other national laboratories and industry to accomplish research goals.
- Present results at technical meetings, draft reports and summaries for publications.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Research in Specialized Areas (95% effort)
- Participate in biomedical research to work in the area of musculoskeletal and cancer biology.
Professional Competence and Activity (3%)
- May participate in appropriate professional/technical societies or groups and other educational and research organizations.
- May review research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications related to area of expertise.
University and Public Service (2% effort)
- May maintain liaison and respond to the needs of various industry organizations, state and federal agencies, and other external groups on issues related to area of expertise.
- May participate in activities of meetings/committees within the department, college, campus and other University entities, as appropriate.

Qualifications
Junior Specialist
- Candidates must possess a recent B.S. in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computer Science or related field
- Candidate must have a solid understanding of biological principles and bioinformatics terminologies, and familiarity with commonly used bioinformatics tools and databases
- Proficiency in R, Python and/or Perl, and familiarity with the Linux environment
- Proficient interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment with a diverse technical staff.
- Ability to multi-task with a team on multiple time constrained projects.
- Ability to prioritize workload and incorporate feedback at a professional manner
Assistant Specialist
- Candidates must possess a recent M.S. in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computer Science or related field
- Candidates must have a solid understanding of biological principles and bioinformatics terminologies, and familiarity with commonly used bioinformatics tools and databases
- Proficiency in R, Python and/or Perl, and familiarity with the Linux environment
- Proficient interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment with a diverse technical staff.
- Ability to multi-task with a team on multiple time constrained projects.
- Ability to prioritize workload and incorporate feedback at a professional manner
- Experience in next generation sequencing data analysis.
- Experience in data mining and machine learning.
- Experience in proteomics data analysis.
