Position description

The Brummer Lab in the Department of Plant Sciences is recruiting for a full-time Assistant/Associate Project Scientist to work on crop plant improvement in hemp and other crops.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

I. RESEARCH IN SPECIALIZED AREAS (85%)
Research activity (60%)
This position requires creative contributions to and collaborative development of an active research program investigating the research area of plant breeding, genetics, and genomics, especially focused on cultivar development, genetic diversity analysis, plant breeding methodology, and the genetic basis of traits important for adaptation, production, and yield of hemp and other crop species of relevance to California. The candidate will help to determine research goals in consultation with the Principal Investigator. The candidate will design specific projects, including the selection of appropriate methods and techniques, to be conducted in the field, greenhouse, and/or laboratory. In some cases, the candidate will supervise students or technicians regarding the technical aspects of the research, including methods development, trouble-shooting problems, interpreting results, and planning follow-up experiments.

    Publication (15%)

The candidate will publish research results in peer-reviewed journals, books, and other outlets in collaboration with the PI and/or other members of the research team. The candidate may publish independently as warranted.

    Grant Acquisition (10%)

The candidate will assist the PI in writing grant proposals for funding from federal and state agencies, private companies, and other funding organizations. The candidate will prepare and assist in the preparation of reports as required by granting agencies. The candidate will interact with funding agencies and prepare modifications of budgets and other grant components as needed.

II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (15%)
The candidate will participate in professional societies and conferences appropriate to their specific field and will serve as a reviewer of research proposals and scientific publications as appropriate. The candidate will attend seminars to present research results and may give oral presentations to public and professional interest groups. When appropriate, the candidate may coordinate and/or give presentations at seminars, laboratory meetings, or educational functions.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

a. PhD in plant breeding, plant genetics, or other relevant field (must be obtained at time of appointment)
b. 2+ years experience in an academic or industry plant breeding program
c. Demonstrated ability to design and conduct field, greenhouse, and laboratory experiments
d. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively on multi-institutional teams
e. Experience overseeing personnel

Preferred qualifications

f. Experience analyzing scientific data and writing scientific publications in peer reviewed journals
g. Experience with hemp research
h. Experience analyzing genome sequence and/or genetic marker data
