Position description

NATURE AND PURPOSE

The Professional Researcher develops and oversees their own independent, creative, and high quality research program equivalent to that required for the Professor series. The Professional Researcher takes major responsibility and leadership for their programs. Generally, the appointee is expected to secure funding as a Principal Investigator, but may be funded as a co-PI within a large center or collaborative program grant on which many independent investigators are working, as long as it is clear that the activities led by the professional researcher within the larger project constitute his/her own independent research program. Appointees do not have teaching responsibilities.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

I. RESEARCH (90%)

This candidate is required to develop an independent research program investigating the neural mechanisms of sensory perception, particularly with regards to the primate auditory cortex. In particular the candidate must have published data on amplitude – modulated signals in alert non-human primates, with single electrodes and/or with multi-contact probes. They must also have experience using the MatLab format for complex data analysis in both the single unit as well as in population coding. The candidate must have experience analyzing single neuron data in non-human primates while they listen to complex sounds from one or more sources simultaneously.

The candidate will be expected to:

  1. Devise, develop and implement analytical techniques designed to determine: A. neural correlates of auditory perception in the temporal realm.
    B. neural correlates of auditory perception in the spatial realm. C. neural correlates of the perception of signals in noisy environments.
  2. Summarize and analyze single neuron and psychophysical data from non-human primates and human psychophysical subjects.
  3. Assist in the development of practical and analytical techniques using multi-contact electrode probes in non-human primates.
  4. Publish research results in peer-reviewed journals as senior author.
  5. Prepare reports on research findings.
  6. Assist in preparing extramural research funding applications.
  7. Mentor junior members of the laboratory in the purpose, goals, and usage of analytical techniques.

Other research duties may include:

  1. Supervise employees paid on the budget.
  2. Write and submit progress reports to funding agencies.
  3. Train, consult with, and advise graduate students and post-doctoral researchers with regard to experimental design and data analysis of studies conducted in his or her area of expertise.

II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (5%)

The candidate will participate in, assist in preparation of abstracts for, and present data at professional societies and conferences such as the Association for Research in Otolaryngology (ARO), the Society for Neuroscience (SfN) annual meeting and Advances and Perspectives in Auditory Neuroscience (APAN).

III.UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5%)
University and Public Service is required for the Associate and Full Title ranks. The candidate will engage in University service activities including but not limited to committee service, particularly for Center for Neuroscience and College of Biological Sciences as invited by the coordinating committee Chairs, Department Chairs and Center Director. Guest lectures at the graduate and/or undergraduate level, as well as participation in journal club activities would count to satisfy this requirement. Teaching full classroom courses is not an expectation of this position. The candidate will also engage in public outreach activities that include presenting scientific research results to the general public and providing relevant advice to individuals, private corporations, or public agencies with information relevant to auditory processing and/or aging.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

-Ph. D. in Neuroscience or a related field with an emphasis on sensory physiology as represented in the non-human primate sensory cortex.

-Training in a different sensory or motor system during postdoctoral training.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

-Publications in peer-reviewed journals in aspects of auditory cortical neuronal responses, either at the single neuron and/or the population of single neuron (specifically non MUA, EEG, or fMRI levels of analysis)in sensory physiology in non, behavioral neuroscience, animal behavior, or a related field.
