Position description

UC Davis Children’s Hospital
School of Medicine

Department of Pediatrics
Child and Adolescent Abuse Resource and Evaluation (CAARE) Center

The University of California Davis, School of Medicine is seeking a Director of the Child and Adolescent Abuse Resource and Evaluation (CAARE) Center at the Associate or Full Professor rank (commensurate with credentials) in the Health Science Clinical Professor or Clinical X Series. Proven excellence in clinical care, education, research, community engagement, leadership and administrative experience is required.

The CAARE Center is a mental health clinic committed to increasing awareness, understanding, prevention and treatment of the challenges associated with child maltreatment and to doing so in a manner that reduces disparities and ensures equitable access to care. Within this mission, the CAARE Center aims to build and maintain a culture and climate based on mutual respect and caring that ensures that equity and social justice are woven into the work we do every day.

The CAARE Center comprises one of 15 divisions in the Department of Pediatrics. The division's academic and clinical offices are based at the UC Davis CAARE Center, an internationally known clinical, research, and training center on the University of California, Davis Medical Center campus. The Division includes a Community Mental Health Clinic funded by Early Periodic Screening, Diagnosis, and Treatment (Medi-Cal contract) that provides therapy and assessment services for maltreated/traumatized children and their families. The CAARE Center has a nationally competitive APA approved Psychology Internship, as well as a Postdoctoral fellowship program in Clinical Psychology. There is also a California Department of Healthcare Services-funded program supporting Master's level trainees. In addition to a federally funded Parent-Child Care (PC-CARE) Training Center, there are numerous federal, state, and county grants that support clinical services for maltreated, homeless, incarcerated, and other socio-economically vulnerable children and their parents.

CAARE Center staff provide high-quality, evidence-based treatments such as Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Parent-Child Care (PC-CARE), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Psychologists in the CAARE Center Evaluation Program conduct psychological and child welfare evaluations, including parent-child relationship assessments, treatment/ reunification planning, juvenile competency, and juvenile/adult recidivism risk assessment. They also provide expert witness testimony, education, and consultation regarding the effects of trauma on children and related topics. CAARE Center staff provide assessment and treatment for a wide range of behavioral disorders, in collaboration with clinicians representing Psychiatry, Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics, and Adolescent Medicine. CAARE staff also provide assessment and mental health treatment for Pediatric Endocrinology, Gastroenterology and Pain clinics. Division faculty may also be affiliated with the MIND Institute, with over 50 affiliated interprofessional faculty and 71 externally funded projects. The Division has an affiliation with the CIRCLE Clinic, an integrated care clinic serving children in or at risk of being involved in the Child Welfare system. In addition to direct client care, the CAARE Center has a long history of training other mental health and social service providers throughout the western region of the United States.

In collaboration with CAARE Center faculty and staff and community agencies, the Director will lead the development, implementation, and execution of innovative educational initiatives, clinical programs, and community partnerships. Priorities for the Director of the CAARE Center will be to demonstrate excellence in leadership and effective management to leverage current strengths of the Division in research, training, clinical care, and community engagement/advocacy. The Director should have a record of active involvement in promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in their workplace and of promoting culturally and linguistically appropriate services with patients. The successful Director will be a superb clinician and patient and family advocate who possess effective professional management skills and demonstrates exemplary leadership in the field.

The Department of Pediatrics is a leader in health professions education within the School of Medicine and has an exceptional Pediatric Residency Program, the only one of its kind in the Greater Sacramento Region.
