Position description

I. ADMINISTRATION/MANAGEMENT OF PROGRAMS (75%)
• Management of BML endangered White Abalone Captive Breeding Program (65%)
• Maintains the NOAA NMFS White Abalone Invertebrate Enhancement Permit for captive production and wild collection of ESA-listed white abalone, including annual reporting, amendments, and renewals.
• Maintains other necessary permits for the endangered White Abalone Captive Breeding Program (e.g., CDFW collection permit(s)).
• Oversees the maintenance of BML endangered White Abalone Culture facilities, animal care, and reproduction.
• Supervises BML endangered White Abalone Captive Breeding Program staff, including Junior Specialists, Laboratory Technicians, and Postdoctoral Scholars.
• Secures and manages extramural funding for the BML White Abalone Captive Breeding Program – including full salary for this position – through grants, partnerships, and donations.
• Develops, obtains funding for, and oversees applied research and outreach that facilitate aquaculture and restoration.
• Provides intellectual leadership and scholarship to the BML White Abalone Captive Breeding Program and its staff.

• Coordination of all endangered White Abalone Captive Breeding Program partners (10%)
• Coordinates and strengthens collaborations among over a dozen facilities holding live white abalone and/or their tissues under the NOAA NMFS White Abalone Invertebrate Enhancement Permit.
• Coordinates and strengthens collaborations related to aquaculture and restoration with Native Tribes, aquaculture farms, aquariums, universities, non-profits, and state and government agencies.
• Provides intellectual leadership and scholarship to White Abalone Captive Breeding Program partners listed above.
II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (5%)
• Participates in regular professional conferences and community organizations.
• Participates in training activities to enhance professional development, such as administrative trainings, professional conferences, and workshops.
• Provides intellectual leadership and scholarship to NOAA’s White Abalone Recovery Program and related aquaculture and restoration efforts.
III. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (20%)
• Performs outreach, engagement, and extension related to aquaculture and restoration to relevant audiences – including restoration and commercial aquaculture practitioners, academics, and general audiences – through webinars, lectures/presentations, tours/field trips, social media, and interactions with press, among other platforms.
• Participates in the administration of BML, CMSI, and UC Davis through appropriate roles in governance and policy formulation, e.g., through committee membership, community activities, projects that are University-wide in scope, and service in a liaison capacity with other public and private agencies.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Experience supervising students and staff in a research environment.
Experience managing a multi-institution program.
Experience managing state and federal permits.
Demonstrated success writing and receiving extramural contracts and grants.
Experience with budgeting and managing contracts and grants.
Knowledge of marine invertebrate physiology and reproduction.
Knowledge of seawater plumbing and life support systems.
Experience conducting scientific research and publishing scientific literature.
Experience managing data across multiple institutions for a collaborative project.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

Ph.D. Is required

Preferred qualifications (other preferred, but not required, qualifications for the position)

Ph.D. in marine science or related field.
Two or more years of experience in restoration aquaculture.
Experience conducting restoration aquaculture for endangered species.
Experience managing a large, collaborative program with academic, governmental, and private partnerships.
