Position description
As part of a campus-wide initiative to hire leading clinical faculty with a strong commitment to teaching, research/scholarly activity and service that will:
- Promote the success of underrepresented people in medicine (i.e., African American, Latino(a)(x)/Chicano(a)/Hispanic, and Native American/Indigenous populations), including faculty, patients, trainees, and the community;
- Address the needs of our increasingly diverse state; and
- Work to improve barriers preventing full participation of underrepresented people in higher education
UC Davis announces as assistant/associate/professor rank clinical faculty position in the School of Medicine. The successful candidate also will have an accomplished track record (calibrated to career stage) of teaching, research/scholarly work or service activities addressing the needs of underrepresented people, and a clearly articulated vision of how their work at UC Davis will continue to contribute to the University’s mission of serving the needs of our diverse state and student population. Applicants’ track record of engagement and activity related to diversity, equity, and inclusion as well as their plans for future engagement will be a significant part of the overall evaluation of the candidate’s qualifications for a faculty appointment. The University’s student population is approximately 35,500. UC Davis School of Medicine
Our students are leaders who appreciate rigorous academic training balanced with hands-on experience and a strong desire to serve. Many of our faculty specialize in translational research, covering a wide range of areas, and are engaged in leading-edge, interdisciplinary collaborations within the UC Davis community and with other highly regarded institutions around the country.
Our school is consistently ranked by U.S. News & World Report among the top schools in the nation for primary care training and research. Classrooms and lecture halls are directly across the street from UC Davis Medical Center, one of the nation’s premiere teaching hospitals, and many of the university’s research laboratories are also on the Sacramento campus and equally convenient.
The School of Medicine, according the latest rankings published March 30, 2021, by U.S. News & World Report, is ranked No. 4 for diversity among its student body.
UC Davis, in fact, was the top-ranked medical school for diversity outside of the East Coast.
The impressive ranking is based on enrollment of underrepresented minority (URM) groups, defined as Hispanic/Latinx, Black/African American, American Indian /Alaskan Native or Asian Pacific Islander, and its comparison to the state’s demographics. The School of Medicine reported a total URM enrollment of 37.3% in 2020, the period considered for the ranking.

- Experience or ability to foster collegiality and work collaboratively in a diverse environment
- Experience or ability to adhere to University policies and procedures
We desire applicants who have identified strengths and experiences in the following areas:
- M.D., D.O. or equivalent in a biomedical science-related discipline awarded by time of hire
- Board certification and fellowship in specialty, as applicable, and eligibility for medical licensure in the State of California
- Evidence of commitment to or strong potential for commitment to the advancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion for underrepresented people in medicine (i.e., Black/African American, Latino(a)(X)/Hispanic, and Native American/Indigenous populations), and how this commitment integrates with teaching, research/scholarly activity, and service.
- Demonstrated excellence in clinical care that addresses health inequities to improve the well-being of oppressed and marginalized groups and communities.
- Commitment to excellence in education and clinical training. Demonstrated potential or evidence of ability to teach and mentor at both undergraduate (medical students) and graduate (residents and fellows) medical education levels.
- Excellence in research or scholarly activity that complements or extends existing academic strengths in the school.
