Position description

The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME), in the College of Engineering at UC Davis, invites candidates for a tenured Associate Professor in Optical Spectroscopy and Imaging faculty position.

Candidates should have an existing track record in Biophotonics, specifically in Optical Spectroscopy and Imaging, and be open to collaborative studies with faculty and scientists at the UC Davis Medical Center, as well as the newly established National Center for Interventional Biophotonic Technologies funded by the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering. The expectation will be to build an internationally successful and interdisciplinary research program, be active in acquiring extramural funding, participate in teaching at both undergraduate and graduate level, and be willing to help establish an innovative multi-disciplinary curriculum in the field of medical Biophotonics.

Considering the Associate Professor rank, candidates should have a commensurate record of scholarly accomplishments, teaching experience, and a sustained externally funded research program. Preference will be given to candidates that can demonstrate a commitment to collaboration in their previous research program, in particular with clinical departments and the medical imaging community.

We are particularly interested in candidates who can demonstrate a history of successful, team-based research, interaction with faculty, students, and other scientists from diverse backgrounds. In addition, the research program of successful candidates is expected to integrate various campus strengths (e.g., of the School of Medicine, the School of Veterinary Medicine, UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center, Center for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Research).

As one of the country’s leading R1 universities, UC Davis seeks candidates with exceptional potential for and record of research, teaching, and inclusive excellence. In addition, the successful candidate will demonstrate an understanding of the barriers preventing full participation of members from historically underrepresented and marginalized student communities in higher education. Applicants’ track record of engagement and activity related to diversity, equal opportunity, and inclusion as well as their plans for future engagement will be a significant part of the overall evaluation of the candidate’s qualifications for a faculty appointment.

The College of Engineering has an exciting new Strategic Research Vision.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering is committed to building an excellent, diverse, and inclusive faculty, staff, and student body. The department consists of 34 faculty members and serves over 450 undergraduate students in an ABET accredited program. The department has existing strengths in the areas of tissue engineering/regenerative medicine, cellular and molecular engineering, biomechanics, biomedical imaging, micro/nano systems, therapeutics, and computational/systems biology. BME faculty benefit from close collaborations with the School of Medicine, Division of Biological Sciences, and School of Veterinary Medicine. The Department is home to state-of-the-art resources and facilities that serve both our academic and research programs, including the Center for Molecular and Genomic Imaging and the TEAM (Translating Engineering Advances to Medicine) Design, Prototyping, and Fabrication Laboratories. The department is also highly engaged in the campus Aggie Square innovation initiative, located at the UC Davis Sacramento campus, including the development of new undergraduate and graduate focused education programs.

The University of California is committed to creating and maintaining a community dedicated to the advancement, application, and transmission of knowledge and creative endeavors through academic excellence, where all individuals who participate in University programs and activities can work and learn together in a safe and secure environment, free of violence, harassment, discrimination, exploitation, or intimidation. With this commitment, UC Davis conducts a reference check on all first choice candidates for Academic Senate positions eligible for tenure or security of employment. The reference check involves contacting the administration of the applicant’s previous institution(s) to ask whether there have been substantiated findings of misconduct that would violate the University’s Faculty Code of Conduct. To implement this process, UC Davis requires all applicants for any open search for associate/full professor to complete, sign, and upload the form entitled “Authorization to Release Information” into RECRUIT as part of their application. If an applicant does not include the signed authorization with the application materials, the application will be considered incomplete, and as with any incomplete application, will not receive further consideration. Although all applicants for faculty recruitments must complete the entire application, only finalists considered for positions with tenure or security of employment will be subject to reference checks.
