Position description
The UC Davis Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering is seeking a Junior Specialist I for a full time 100% position to assist in the developing and demonstrating a real-time monitoring and early detection system for insect activity in rice and almonds. The Junior Specialist rank is an entry level position, The junior specialist rank is an entry level position requiring a BS degree in Computer Engineering or related field, accordingly it is inappropriate to hire applicants with advanced degrees in this field, or those with bachelor’s degrees and three years’ relevant work experience.

90% Research:
The Junior Specialist (JS) will be involved in developing a new system for detecting insect activity in agricultural products such as rice, almonds and walnuts using imaging techniques.
The candidate will work with a team in developing a small, low power camera board that utilizes WiFi and Bluetooth. Working to help improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the system as a whole.
The preferred JS should be majored in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field. The candidate should have experience in circuit design and embedded systems programming. The candidate should be proficient in C++ and Arduino programming. Other members of the team will be working on the development of a website and app. It is not required but it would be preferred if the candidate also had a basic understanding of web development and react native. It would also be preferred if the candidate was knowledgeable in the area of image processing.
The JS is also required to conduct research activities in our lab, storage and processing facilities to validate the functionality and to document the new system effectiveness and accuracy
The candidate will be working with a team and will be expected to communicate regularly, giving frequent updates to the other members of the team and the PI. The candidate should also expect to give regular presentations about their work and their findings. The JS will also provide mentorship to undergraduate students in Dr. Pan’s research group, training them in development, deployment, and assessment of the new system functions and operations.
Professional Competency 5%
The Junior Specialist will present research results at regular lab meetings, as well as have opportunities to present research findings at state and/or national meetings.
University Service 5%
The candidate will work closely with the PI, and will also provide mentorship to undergraduate students, who the candidate will mentor on the operation of electronic systems and embedded design.

BS degree in Computer Engineering or related field acquired by start date
