The Department of Anatomy, Physiology and Cell Biology at the University of California, Davis, invites applicants for a qualified Junior Specialist.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
This position will be for a for Junior Specialist in the Connon Lab:

EDUCATION BACKGROUND: the minimum qualification required for this position is a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent) with and relevant research experience in ecotoxicology (larval/juvenile fish and aquatic invertebrate species), including chemical analysis, knowledge in embryonic development, behavioral studies, DNA/RNA extraction, gel electrophoresis, and qPCR.

REPORTING: the Jr. Specialist will work under the supervision of Drs. Connon and Segarra.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Research (90%): This position requires the ability to perform experiments on California fish species as well as aquatic invertebrates, to assess their behavior environmental tolerances (thermal and salinity stress, contaminants, and disease), molecular and physiological performance, data analyses, and assistance with report writing of results and their significance. The Jr. Specialist will be responsible for the coordination of fish exposures, chemical analysis, and behavioral assays. The position requires full analysis of behavioral data including appropriate statistics. The Jr. Specialist will assist with writing up results for submission to peer-reviewed journals, leading to co-authorship on resulting manuscripts, as appropriate.

Additional Responsibilities: General responsibilities include assistance with lab management and coordination of supplies needed for the successful day-to-day running of the lab; e.g., ordering supplies, actively participating in weekly lab meetings, read and review articles related to proposed studies. The Jr. Specialist will need to become familiar with the relevant literature associated with fish end invertebrate behavior, health, and modes of action of various pesticides. Travel will be required as part of the work. Because work is conducted on animals, weekend work will also be required. The Jr. Specialist is expected to show initiative and be willing to form part of a dedicated team of scientists.

Professional Competence (5%): The Junior Specialist will be expected to present their results at local and national workshops and conferences.

University and Public Service (5%): Service will constitute mentorship of undergraduate students and other technical staff in the Connon laboratory, and collaborator’s facilities as appropriate.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
• Baccalaureate degree (or equivalent) with and relevant research experience in ecotoxicology (larval/juvenile fish and aquatic invertebrate species)
• Experience with fish care and maintenance (e.g., zebrafish, salmon)
• Experience with basic water chemistry
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills to work with other lab members at all levels.
• Experience with biological data entry and willingness to assist with analysis.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Experience with chemical analyses
• Experience with embryonic development and morphometric analysis.
• Experience with RNA/DNA extractions, cDNA synthesis and quantitative PCR.
• Experience and specialized knowledge of Ethovision software, as well as on DanioVision, DanioScope system processes.
• Experience with hypoxia and thermal tolerance tests.

SALARY RANGE:
Step 1 - $4,083.33/monthly; or Step II - $4,350.00/monthly
