Position description

Abbreviated Position Description
This is a 100% Cooperative Extension (CE) appointment, an academic position in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an externally funded, applied research program in the economics of food supply chains, and to develop an extension education and outreach program that extends information to diverse clientele groups (e.g., small- and mid-scale farmers, supply chain intermediaries, low-income consumers, policy makers), including under-served groups. This individual will be expected to work closely with academic and extension colleagues, including academic senate faculty, government scientists, other cooperative extension academics, working in related fields (e.g., nutrition, and food science and technology). In addition, advising and mentoring of graduate students is expected.

Professors in Cooperative Extension (CE) provide statewide leadership to University colleagues, public agencies, community-based organizations, youth, consumers, and citizens in their area of expertise. The Professor in Cooperative Extension is expected to keep campus and county-based University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) academics and clientele appraised of emerging issues and research findings and directions, conduct applied research and develop applications of research-based knowledge to specific problems, and provide educational leadership and technical information support for county-based CE academics and clientele. A Professor in CE is a primary liaison between University research units and statewide clientele. The Professor in CE will be expected to provide leadership and participation in ANR Program Teams, workgroups, and Strategic Initiatives, work closely with CE academics toward the resolution of issues of regional and statewide importance, and coordinate statewide programming with UCCE and AES colleagues throughout California. The Professor in CE also identifies and considers the needs of all relevant major clientele groups in planning, developing and executing applied research and education programs. The Professor in CE is evaluated for merit and promotion using four areas of expectation that include Extension Education, Applied Research, Professional Competence and Activity, and University and Public Service.

I. General disciplinary focus: The economics of food supply chains will be the focus of this position. Accordingly, applicants should have the professional background necessary to conduct original applied research related to issues of supply chain intermediaries’ potential to exercise market power, analysis of policies and alternative supply chain structures to support resiliency and efficiency, and identification of opportunities (e.g., marketing unique product attributes) and challenges (e.g., inefficiencies in processes or bottlenecks in transportation and processing) facing the current food production system. The research and outreach program will focus on food markets and supply chain issues impacting small and midscale farmers and low-income consumers who are less able to endure supply disruptions.

II. Educational and professional background requirements: A minimum requirement is a Ph.D. in economics, agricultural economics, or a closely related field. The successful candidate must have a record that documents productivity in research as evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals.

III. Supporting units: The duty station for this position will be at the UC Davis Campus and will be supported by the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics. Specialists serve as an integral member of the faculty with appropriate support for office space and access to staff who will handle grant administration and personnel matters.

Recommend FTE: This is a 100% Cooperative Extension position to be recruited at the Assistant Professor in Cooperative Extension level and is an 11-month appointment.

Expected Contributions:

By developing reciprocal and mutually beneficial relationships with colleagues and with various stakeholders, the Professor in CE is expected to create public value by developing a program with four elements:

Extension Education: Key extension activities include but are not limited to:
• Provide statewide and national leadership in matters concerning the economics of food supply chains.
• Plan, organize, and participate in programs designed to educate CE academics and other clientele including small and mid-scale farmers, supply chain intermediaries, low-income consumers, and policy makers about the economics of food supply chains, including strategies and innovations to improving supply chain resiliency and promoting greater competition and opportunities for small- and mid- scale producers.
• Develop extension programs including print and electronic materials that address the economic evaluation of the efficiency and profitability of current food supply chains as well as the analysis of potential alternatives to mitigate market power, increase opportunities for niche marketing, and enhance processing and distribution of agricultural production.
• Provide campus and county-based CE academics, with up-to-date and extendible information on the economic performance of food supply chains in California recognizing the great heterogeneity within California agriculture in terms of available products, farm/operation scale, etc.
• Conduct educational programs for CE colleagues and others that focus on timely evaluation of crucial economic issues facing clientele statewide.

Mission-oriented Research
• Within the broad area of the economics of food supply chains, the candidate will collaborate with Academic Senate faculty, campus and UC Cooperative Extension (UCCE) Academics and stakeholders on emerging issues and develop and conduct research and extension activities to address the economic implications of supply chain issues in California. Potential research areas include, but are not limited to: (1) assessment of market power of supply chain intermediaries; (2) identification of supply-chain mechanisms for specialty food products; (3) identification of inefficiencies and bottlenecks in transportation and distribution networks and their impacts on prices and availability; (4) consideration of alternatives to highly concentrated supply chains, and policies to promote greater supply-chain competition; (5) analysis of policies to create and support resilient supply chains; (6) understanding the impacts of close vertical coordination on supply-chain resilience; (7) evaluating the role of innovations such as e-commerce in supply-chain performance and resilience; and (8) economic assessment of how supply chain structure and disruptions likely impact small and midscale farmers and low-income consumers.

• We expect the successful candidate to publish their research findings in peer-reviewed journals such as the American Journal Agricultural Economics; Agricultural Economics; Journal of Agricultural & Resource Economics; Food Policy; Agroecology & Sustainable Food Systems; and in various other electronic and print venues such as California Agriculture or UC/ANR publications.

Professional Competence and Activity: The appointee will be expected to participate in professional society activities including presenting papers at national and international meetings; reviewing manuscripts and grant proposals in his/her area of expertise; and establishing productive working relationships with scientists and extension personnel statewide, and in other states and countries. The goal would be to gain national and international recognition for scholarly contributions in the broad area of agricultural economics, as he/she advances to the higher ranks in the UC system.

University and Public Service: The appointee will serve on committees that support the needs of the Department, University and ANR, including appropriate ANR Program Teams and Workgroups. The appointee may also serve on advisory councils and boards appropriate to the candidate’s area of expertise. The candidate should ultimately be recognized as a knowledgeable partner who can provide reliable information and build research-informed networks to address public issues in the state of California.

Availability of Space and Resources: This position will be in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics in the Social Sciences and Humanities Building on the UC Davis central campus. Department faculty share administrative and accounting staff in Cluster Five. Ongoing research support is provided by a departmental computer facility comprised of a local area network and centralized computing system, which augments the usual PC or Macintosh computing capabilities. Permanent Programmer/Analyst staff provides on-site assistance for most computing needs. Clerical support staff provides routine administrative services.

It is current department policy to provide a base level of support allocation to each faculty member, which funds routine annual expenses including telephone tolls, copy services, computer/software enhancements, minimal travel expenses, and any other expenses deemed necessary to support the position.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
  • At time of hire a Ph.D. degree in economics, agricultural economics or other closely related discipline is required.
Preferred qualifications

• Knowledge, experience, interest and/or academic coursework related to the economics of agricultural production and supply chains is highly desired.

• Evidence of research excellence in the candidate’s discipline, and demonstrated potential for developing an independent applied research program in the economics of food supply chains.

• Evidence or demonstrated interest in and potential to conduct multi-disciplinary research.

• Evidence of leadership, team-building, and organizational skills to plan and conduct independent and collaborative research projects, and to develop a successful extension education and outreach program with growers, other industry stakeholders, and policymakers.

• Commitment to ANR and the mission of the land-grant system and evidence of a “vision” for development of a research and outreach program in the economics of food supply chains.

• Ability to direct graduate students in the Agricultural and Resource Economics M.S. and Ph.D. programs, and willingness to serve as a student adviser.

• Demonstrated oral and written communication skills, including the ability to present information clearly to non-scientific and public audiences.

• Interest, understanding, and commitment to contributing to diversity. Demonstrated ability to contribute to diversity and inclusion of groups that are underrepresented in the academy through extension education, research, and/or service would be a plus. Statement of Contributions to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion will be assessed by their general quality and the candidates’ awareness, contributions, and plans for future efforts related to diversity and inclusion.
