Position description

The Kliebenstein lab (https://psfaculty.plantsciences.ucdavis.edu/kliebenstein/) in the Department of Plant Sciences at the University of California Davis is seeking a Junior Specialist to join the team. The successful candidate will help on projects to the evolution of plant/Botrytis interactions. The Junior Specialist will work closely with postdoc and graduate students, and undergraduate researchers. The successful candidate will assist with: 1) Conducting large infection assays of Botrytis isolates on multiple different plant species, 2) Collecting tissue from these infections and extracting RNA, 3) Generating transcriptomic libraries for RNA sequencing, 4) Develop a independent research question and test that question with this data and 5) writing and presentation of results to scientific community and stakeholders.

Per UCD-APM 330, it is inappropriate to appoint an individual with a Master's or Doctoral degree in the relevant discipline or a baccalaureate degree plus three or more years of experience as a Junior Specialist.

A. Research in specialized areas (85%)

  • 85% work closely with postdoc and graduate students to help plan and conduct the infection assays and tissue collection. Train with the postdoc and graduate students on RNA extraction and transcriptome library preparation with a focus on conducting this work independently. The candidate will have the opportunity to create and test their own research question using the data collected. They will be actively involved in reporting and publishable research activities including participation in discussions on research and the interpretation of research results, as well as co-authorship in publications.

B. Professional Competence and Activity (10%)

  • Attend seminars on topics related to fields of interest.
  • Participate and present in all lab meetings and participate in scientific discussions with peers to enhance confidence.
  • Participate in training programs to enhance knowledge and skills depending on the candidate’s long-term goals
  • Attend at least one national or international meeting to present their work

C. University and Public Service (5%)

  • Help with mentoring of undergraduate research students.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

A. Bachelor's degree in Biology, Plant Sciences, Biochemistry, Genetics or another related field (at time of appointment).
B. Experience in molecular protocols, protein or DNA focused
C. Experience in organizing experiments and data collection
D. Experience in plant research
E. Experience in plant growth and maintenance

Preferred qualifications

F. Computational skills in R, Perl and/or Python
G. Experience in fungal growth
H. Experience in RNA protocols
I. Ability to maintain focus through large experiments
