Position description

The Project Scientist makes significant and creative contributions to a research or creative project in his/her academic discipline. The appointee possesses the subject matter expertise and the creative energy necessary to function at a high level of competence. The appointee will participate in activities to increase, improve, or upgrade competency. Appointees with Project (e.g., Scientist) titles may engage in University and public service. They do not have teaching responsibilities. Although the Project Scientist is expected to work independently under the general guidance of an academic member with an independent research program (i.e., Professor, Professional Researcher, Specialist in Cooperative Extension, etc.), he/she is not required to develop an independent research program or reputation. He/she will carry out research or creative programs with supervision by an individual in an academic title that carries with it automatic Principal status. The Project Scientist does not usually serve as a Principal Investigator but may do so by exception.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

The basic qualification for this position is an M.D., Ph.D or equivalent doctorate degree.

The qualified applicant should have: (i) A strong cardiovascular domain science knowledge and experience in research involving multi-dimensional models of cardiovascular disease and have a strong background in omics sciences including genetics, genomics, proteomics, or metabolomics. (ii) With regards to Omics data processing, it is important that the candidate has an expertise in multi-omics studies in blood and tissue samples from patients and animal models and is skillful with wet lab experiments. The candidate should be proficient with mass-spectrometry experiments to handle complex proteomics- and metabolomics data sets from samples of patients and animal models. (iii) A strong background in cardiovascular medicine, specifically in aspects related to the management of patient cohort studies with different types of cardiomyopathies and heart failure and with an emphasis on coordinating the collection and distribution of patient samples, and clinical data dispensation. (iv) Capability and comfort level with administrative tasks and responsibilities to support the UC Davis NIH HeartShare Center and Steering Committee, including support in the preparation of scientific publications and new grant submissions, conducting communications with other institutions; scheduling and coordinating teleconferences among HeartShare Centers; collating and maintaining publications & other dossiers, and prepare meeting agendas for the NIH HeartShare Centers and Steering committee.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

The ideal candidate will show strong collaboration, communication, and organizational skills to play a key role in the UC Davis NIH HeartShare Center and Steering Committee, promoting teamwork in a diverse multidisciplinary environment and supporting the research activities of the PIs and research teams. Employee will be supervised directly by PIs and will be communicating and interacting with the team of investigators and physicians of the center. Self-guidance in details of assigned tasks is expected.
