DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACOLOGY

The University of California, Davis, School of Medicine, Department of Pharmacology invites applications for 1-2 full time Junior Specialist positions in the sub-specialty area of Cardiovascular Research. Junior Specialist appointees will be involved in interdisciplinary studies focusing on questions in Pharmacology sub-specialties in the areas stated above. The incumbent will devote 90% of time to research, and 10% to university and public service as described below.

Research (90%): Successful candidates will participate in laboratory and/or human-subject studies. The incumbent will actively participate in creative activities including research presentation and publications. The candidate will assist the PI and support the laboratory research in multiple ways, including: Aiding in the preparation of cardiac myocytes from small animals (rats, rabbits, mice) according to approved protocols, for use in experiments; recombinant protein expression and analysis; maintenance of various transgenic mouse models and generation and monitoring of various heart failure models. General responsibilities also include active and significant participation in publishable research activities. The candidate will contribute to data collection, analysis and putting together graphical representations of data for scholarly manuscripts as well as participating in writing, editing and reviewing the manuscript. Candidates will review relevant journal articles, participate in scientific discussions in both the lab setting and more formal venues such as the weekly journal club and lab meeting, the monthly departmental research in progress talks and when appropriate local national and international scientific meetings such as Davis cardiovascular symposium.

The goal of the research is to investigate the signaling pathways that regulate excitation-transcription coupling process in the heart and that contribute to dysfunction in heart disease such as heart failure and arrhythmias. Additional insight in pathways such as those mediated by calcium-calmodulin dependent protein kinase signaling, novel therapeutic targets may be identified and validated for the treatment of heart disease. The junior specialist involvement with human research studies will be minimal and does not involve direct contact with patients or patient information. The junior specialist will participate in the isolation of cardiomyocytes from human tissue obtained at the time of transplant or during another type of surgical procedure. Additional experiments will involve biochemical experiments on human cell lines (iPSC or immortalized cells) to identify structural determinants of the Na pump complex and its dimerization.

Service (10 %): The candidate is expected to contribute to University and Public service by mentoring undergraduate students, dissemination of experimental procedures/technical expertise to other research groups and consultation with IACUC and safety committees on campus. Candidates may also be expected to review research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications related to their sub-specialty area. The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills, as well as the ability to work well independently and as part of a team. Junior Specialist positions are short term, two-year maximum appointments based on the needs of the research project. Appointments may be made up to 100%.

Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree in a related field is required by the start date of this position. Basic qualifications include appropriate lab experience in the appropriate sub-specialty area. Basic knowledge of the UCD Pre-purchasing system is preferred.

The candidate should have minimal one-year experience in laboratory or extensive research experience as an undergraduate researcher. The candidate should also have experience working with DNA and Adenoviruses. The candidate should have experience in the design, generation and validation of fluorescent biosensors. The candidate should also have expertise in cell culture techniques and should be familiar with the procedures for proper maintenance of a cell culture facility. Experience with adenovirus generation, amplification and purification is preferred. The candidate should also be familiar with the pre-purchasing system as well as the UC Learning Management System. Successful candidates have experience working in a team and can effectively communicate their knowledge to others.

Potential hazards in the laboratory may include human and animal tissue, adenoviruses and some carcinogenic substances.
