Position description

The Department of Surgery in the School of Medicine and the Department of Biomedical Engineering in the College of Engineering invite applicants for a faculty position at the Assistant Professor rank (Ladder rank, tenure track). This joint appointment will be in both Surgery and Biomedical Engineering and the candidate is expected to be an active member of the Comprehensive Cancer Center located in Sacramento.

We seek an outstanding candidate with a strong translational research background in the development of new technologies that can advance our basic understanding or treatment of cancer. Examples might include “organ on a chip”, imaging, drug/cell delivery, devices, biomaterials, and computational methods or artificial intelligence. The candidate will be expected to develop an independent, extramurally funded research program at the frontier of cancer technology and to contribute to the teaching mission of the University in the School of Medicine and College of Engineering. Applicants must be capable of teaching core undergraduate and graduate courses, be willing to contribute to an innovative multidisciplinary curriculum in the field of biomedical engineering, and eager to mentor graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and medical residents. Research activities will be housed in College of Engineering space in the GBSF building, but additional space may be available in Sacramento to leverage resources at the Cancer Center and Department of Surgery.

UC Davis has a vibrant research community focused on aspects of cancer biology, diagnosis, and treatment. Both the Department of Surgery and the Department of Biomedical Engineering are active participants in this community. We are interested in scholars with strong records of innovative investigation that would complement and leverage these existing programs as well as others in the UC Davis School of Medicine, College of Engineering, and School of Veterinary Medicine.

The UC Davis Medical Center is a comprehensive academic medical center where clinical practice, teaching and research converge to advance human health. Both the Department of Surgery and the Department of Biomedical Engineering are nationally ranked in U.S. News & World Report and have vibrant research programs in a broad ranges of areas that complement cancer technology including cell and tissue engineering, computational and synthetic biology, biomaterials and devices, biomechanics and mechanobiology, and biophotonics and biomedical imaging.

As one of the country’s leading R1 institutions, UC Davis seeks candidates with exceptional potential for and record of professional and/or scholarly achievement and activity, teaching, and inclusive excellence. In addition, the successful candidate will demonstrate an understanding of the barriers preventing full participation of members from historically underrepresented and marginalized student communities in higher education.

Applicants’ track record of engagement and activity related to diversity, equal opportunity, and inclusion as well as their plans for future engagement will be a significant part of the overall evaluation of the candidate’s qualifications for a faculty appointment.

For fullest consideration, please review the full position description, which provides guidance on application requirements and recommendations to strengthen your application.
