The Division of Hematology and Oncology in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of California, Davis, is seeking a full-time Assistant Specialist/Associate Specialist. The purpose of this position is to provide support, coordination and leadership for research studies of Dr. Janai Carr-Ascher and other lab members. In direct collaboration with the Principle Investigator(s), this position will be involved in coordination, management, and maintenance of projects focused on understanding sarcoma (connective tissue cancer) development, the biology of metastasis, and translational studies at UC Davis Health in Sacramento.
The position of Specialist has a narrow focus in a specialized area and provides technical or specialized expertise (e.g., with instrumentation and research equipment or with social science research methods) in the planning and execution of a research project. The Specialist stays apprised of emerging issues and problems and maintains technical competence in the designated area(s) of specialization. Within this defined area and when appropriate, the Specialist is expected to provide leadership, facilitate teamwork and develop collaborative relationships with colleagues and to supply input into the planning of research and educational programs. Normally, Specialists do not have Principal Investigator (PI) status but may obtain permission by exception and/or collaborate with a PI in preparing research proposals for extramural funding.
The research duties primarily include both in vitro and in vivo studies. The position will involve participating in publishable research focused on early tumor formation, growth, and metastasis in sarcoma. For in vitro studies, basic molecular biology techniques will be utilized. This individual will be expected to perform various assays including investigations of proliferation and apoptosis, flow cytometry, gene cloning, advanced imaging, qRT-PCR, western blotting, tissue culture, lentivirus production and use, and organoid generation. For in vivo studies, once trained, this person should be proficient in rodent handling, injections, imaging, and basic survival surgeries.
Other duties include lab manager related and other research responsibilities. Namely, 1) Maintain necessary protocols such as biohazard protocols and IACUC approvals 2) Present research at periodic laboratory meetings and to discuss the progress of the research projects with the PI 3) Generate figures and perform basic scientific writing for use in publications and presentations, 4) Communicate effectively with collaborators and other investigators 5) Coordinate, organize, and keep logs of tissues, cell lines, plasmids, and reagents in the lab, 6) To provide miscellaneous support to the laboratory and operational activities.
• M.S., Ph.D. in Biology or related field or a minimum of 3 years of cancer biology experience
• Experience in preparing publication quality data related to research findings in high-impact factor journals.
• Experience in technical competency in a variety of research techniques and protocols.
• Experience in applying for research grants.
