Position description

The Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of California, Davis invites applications for 1-2 Junior Specialist positions in quantitative cell biology.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Research (80%) This position will be involved in interdisciplinary studies focusing on the regulation of cellular growth and metabolism and the maintenance of homeostasis during tissue growth and repair. The candidate will develop genetic reporter constructs and mammalian cell lines carrying genetically encoded fluorescent biosensors for processes involved in cellular metabolism and signaling. They will conduct live-cell microscopy experiments with these cell lines to quantify intracellular regulatory responses to inhibitors and therapeutic agents. The position also requires maintaining and archiving mammalian cell lines and updating plasmid, cell, and image databases. Finally, the candidate will summarize data, generate figures, present their research in regular group meetings, and assist in preparing manuscripts for publication.

Service (20%)
The junior specialist will be expected to help train and mentor undergraduates, graduate students, and other lab members, and will be expected to help with the overall running of the lab, including ordering, cleaning, and ensuring that safety regulations are met. The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills, as well as the ability to work well independently and as part of a team.

SALARY RANGE: Step I - $46,800 [100% annual] or Step II - $49,800 [100%
annual]), commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Bachelor’s degree in cell or molecular biology or a related scientific field.
Laboratory experience in molecular cloning techniques and mammalian cell culture.
Excellent organizational skills and ability to keep a complete and detailed laboratory notebook of experimental procedures and data.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

Previous experience or coursework in studying signal transduction, biochemistry, and metabolic regulatory pathways.
Basic coding skills in MATLAB, R, Python, or a similar programming language.
Experience with plasmid mapping software such as SnapGene.
