Position description

As part of UC Davis’ commitment to hire leading research faculty with an outstanding commitment to teaching, research and service that will promote the success of historically underrepresented and marginalized student communities and address the needs of our increasingly diverse state and student population, the College of Engineering announces one open tenure-track position, at the Assistant Professor level, in the Department of Computer Science. Applications are encouraged from candidates with a strong background in Software Engineering or Programming Languages and related areas.

As one of the country’s leading research universities, UC Davis seeks candidates with exceptional potential for, or an exceptional record of, research, teaching and inclusive excellence. In addition, the successful candidate will demonstrate an understanding of the barriers preventing full participation of members from historically underrepresented and marginalized student communities in higher education. Applicants’ track record of engagement and activity related to diversity, equal opportunity, and inclusion as well as their plans for future engagement will be a significant part of the overall evaluation of the candidate’s qualifications for a faculty appointment.

Appointment will be as an academic year (9-month) tenure-track Assistant Professor.

Minimum Qualifications

• A Ph.D. or equivalent in Computer Science, or a closely related field, is required and must have been awarded by the date of hire.

Additional Qualifications

We desire applicants who have identified strengths and experiences in the following areas:

  • Excellence in research that complements or extends existing research strengths in the Department of Computer Science and elsewhere on campus, and the potential to attract extramural funding.

  • Evidence of commitment to or strong potential for commitment to the advancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion for historically underrepresented and marginalized student communities, and how this commitment integrates with teaching, research, and service.

  • Commitment to excellence in teaching. Must demonstrate potential or evidence of ability to perform well at both graduate and undergraduate levels and to develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses or seminars.

  • Willingness to teach interdisciplinary courses between SE/PL and Data Science. The UC Davis CS Department prides itself in interdisciplinary teaching and research, participating in initiatives across campus, including the new Data Science Major.

Applicants must have earned a PhD in Computer Science or a closely related discipline, awarded by time of hire. Participation in department, college, and university service as a member of UC Davis Division of the Academic Senate is an expectation under our faculty shared governance model.

We desire candidates who demonstrate understanding of issues affecting underserved populations such as (but not limited to) women, underrepresented minorities, individuals self-identifying as LGBTQIA+, veterans, individuals with disabilities, economically disadvantaged groups, first-generation students, undocumented students, or students with any intersections in between. Successful candidates will help advance UC Davis’ strategic goal of improving access and building an inclusive community for all marginalized populations. A successful candidate also will have an accomplished record (calibrated to career stage) of teaching, research, or service activities addressing the needs of underrepresented minorities, and a clearly articulated vision of how their work at UC Davis will continue to contribute to the University’s mission of serving the needs of our diverse state and student population.

The Department of Computer Science in the College of Engineering, has 41 award-winning faculty members and 265 graduate students. We are a growing department, where nine new faculty members in the last few years have contributed to a vibrant and dynamic research environment.

Interdisciplinary research is fostered by the UC Davis graduate group structure, which brings together faculty from different colleges and departments with related research interests and allows them to co-supervise students. Our location makes it easy to collaborate with industry in the San Francisco Bay Area, and with the State Government in Sacramento.
