Position description

The School of Education (SOE) at the University of California, Davis, invites applicants for an assistant/associate rank search in Critical Studies in Latinx/Chicanx Youth. We seek applicants who bring critical qualitative and community-based participatory methods to explorations of education and learning in school and/or non-school contexts.. The candidate’s expertise may be in education associated with urban, rural, or suburban communities, as aligned with their research agenda and/or approaches. We are particularly interested in speaking with scholars who examine school-community partnerships that can develop between Chicanx/Latinx youth and adults at the intersection of race, class, gender, and sexuality. The ideal candidate will possess interdisciplinary training in allied fields (e.g., Ethnic Studies, Gender Studies), a social justice education research agenda that centers on the challenges and promises of California’s ethnically diverse youth populations coupled with knowledge of high school Ethnic Studies curriculum requirements. Understanding of and demonstrated ability to apply principles and practices associated with Critical Pedagogies, Culturally Relevant Pedagogies, and/or Culturally Sustaining Pedagogies in the university classroom are highly desired, as is the demonstrated ability to engage in collaborative initiatives within and beyond the university setting.

This position is funded through a UC Davis Hiring Investment Program effort. It is one of two funded positions designed to create a cluster of faculty to develop links between the School of Education and the Chicana/o Studies Department. Faculty in these positions will be expected to develop curricular and programmatic collaborations that bridge the School of Education (SOE) and the Chicana/o Studies Department.

Qualifications: (1) Earned doctorate in Education, Chicanx/Latinx Studies, Critical Ethnic Studies, Black Studies, Indigenous Studies, Gender Studies, Sociology, or other appropriate allied fields; (2) substantial evidence of or potential for a productive program of research with high impact in the applicant’s field of study; (3) evidence of, or the potential for, obtaining external research funding and/or community or educational partnership funding; (4) the ability to teach courses on the disparities in education to undergraduates and graduate students. Desirable: 1) Familiarity with recent developments in the area of Ethnic Studies within K-12 schools and/or higher education contexts, and 2) experience teaching youth within K-12 or other out-of-school learning environments.

Responsibilities: Conducting and maintaining a productive program of research with the aims of advancing knowledge of critical race studies, outcomes, and equity; seeking extramural support for research and graduate student support; teaching education courses in the graduate, undergraduate, and/or teacher credentialing programs pertinent to social justice youth development; and serving on school and university committees.

The School of Education at the University of California, Davis offers five Ph.D. program areas including Language, Literacy, and Culture; Learning and Mind Sciences, Mathematics Education, Science and Agricultural Education, and School Organization and Educational Policy. We are home to two professional programs including the Teacher Education Credential and MA program and the Capital Area North Doctorate in Educational Leadership (CANDEL) EdD program. We are home to six centers and various research projects.
