Position description

The Department of Neurological Surgery in the School of Medicine and the Department of Biomedical Engineering in the College of Engineering are recruiting a Cortical Neurophysiologist at the Assistant Professor rank in the Regular (tenure track), Regular/In Residence or In-Residence series. This will be a joint appointment be in Neurological Surgery and Biomedical Engineering. Neurological Surgery will serve as the home department.

We seek an outstanding candidate who studies fundamental mechanisms and brain circuits mediating human cognition, speech and movement, their normal function, and their dysfunction in epilepsy, stroke, traumatic brain injury, and spinal cord injury. Interest and experience in defining and modulating neural circuits with therapeutic intent is desired.

UC Davis has numerous multidisciplinary teams of neuroscientists, clinical faculty, and staff engaged in intracranial recording in humans, computational analysis of data, and clinical-translational applications of this research. The candidate will leverage the research opportunities that arise in the clinical setting to investigate brain neurophysiology, the changes of neural circuits and function occasioned by injury or disease, and the potential for therapeutic neuromodulation.

The candidate will be expected to develop an independent, extramurally funded research program at the frontier of neurobiological discovery and to contribute to the teaching mission of the University in the School of Medicine, College of Engineering, and/or the University-wide Neuroscience or Biomedical Engineering Graduate Programs. Applicants must be capable of teaching in core undergraduate and graduate courses, willing to contribute to an innovative multidisciplinary curriculum in the field of biomedical engineering, and eager to mentor graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and medical residents. Research activities will be housed within one of the neuroscience research centers in Davis. CA.

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

• PhD, MD, or equivalent, and postdoctoral experience in an appropriate discipline; formal training (bachelors, masters, or doctorate) in engineering is desirable but not required.
• Record of research creativity, independence and productivity in cortical neurophysiology.
• Record of obtaining, or the potential to obtain, substantial extramural funding.
• Commitment to excellence in teaching. Ability to teach well and develop new courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels, in particular topics related to biomedical engineering.
• Commitment to mentoring undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral scholars.
• Commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in working with a diverse student population.
• Excellent potential for interactions and collaborations with faculty in the UC Davis School of Medicine, College of Engineering, Center for Neuroscience, and Center for Mind & Brain.
