Position description

The UC Davis Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering is seeking a Junior Specialist I for a full time 100% position to assist in the development of a new system for detecting insect activity in agricultural products such as rice, almonds and walnuts using an imagining technique. The junior specialist rank is an entry level position requiring a BS degree in Computer Science Engineering or related field, accordingly it is inappropriate to hire applicants with advanced degrees in this field, or those with bachelor’s degrees and three years’ relevant work experience. (See APM-UCD 330).

The preferred Junior Specialist should have a degree in Computer Science Engineering or related fields and has experience in web development, creating web servers as well as building websites. The candidate will be required to develop new features on top of the existing server and website according to project or customer needs. It would also be preferred that the candidate have experience in non-relational database in addition to React framework and Node.

RESEARCH 90%
The proposed candidate will be required to conduct research activities in the lab, storage, and processing facilities to validate the functionality, then document the new system effectiveness and accuracy.

PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCY 5%
The incumbent will help prepare presentation materials on the new system features and the performance results in the form of posters, slides, and reports that will be presented at industry meetings and professional conferences.

UNIVERSITY SERVICE 5%
The incumbent will be expected to provide mentorship to undergraduate students in Dr. Pan’s research group, train them in development, deployment, and assessment of the new system functions and operations.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

    BS in degree in Computer Science Engineering or related field acquired by start date

Preferred qualifications

    • Basic knowledge about HTTP
    • Experience working with programming languages: JavaScript, Python, or Java
    • Experience working with RESTful APIs
    • Experience in developing the hardware, software, websites, mobile apps, operating server and databases, designing circuits and building a microcontroller.
    • Laboratory skills to evaluate the insect detection system.
    • Skills to install the system in commercial storage facility and collect data wirelessly.
    • Able to work well under supervision and with others.
    • High level working knowledge of NodeJS/Flask/Spring
    • High level working knowledge of ReactJS/AgularJS/VueJS
    • High level working knowledge of HTML/CSS
    • High level working knowledge of MongoDB
    • High level working knowledge of AWS EC2 and S3
