Nature and Purpose:
Academic Coordinators are appointees who administer academic programs that provide service closely related to the teaching or research mission of the University. This service may be provided to academic departments, to organized research units, to students, or to the general public. Determination of the appropriate level for an appointment for an Academic Coordinator shall take into consideration such factors as program scope and complexity. The duties of an Academic Coordinator are primarily administrative. Individuals in an Academic Coordinator title who are assigned research or instructional duties are required to hold a dual title.
This is a 100% 11 month position in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology, College of Biological Sciences. The Academic Coordinator (AC) will assist in the following capstone laboratory courses:
MCB120L - Molecular Biology & Biochemistry Laboratory
MCB140L - Cell Biology Laboratory
MCB160L - Genetics Laboratory
The capstone lab courses in MCB represent a unique blend of course specific information from each major and experiential learning activities that prepares students to develop an understanding of the quality of experimental data, to construct productive scientific hypotheses, to apply modern experimental techniques to testing scientific hypotheses and to effectively communicate scientific experimental studies to the scientific community and the public. The Academic Coordinator (AC) will be responsible for ensuring the consistency of material between lab sections, the modernization and optimization of laboratory techniques, and the assessment of how the lab experience reinforces to major specific learning objectives.
I. Coordination of Academic Programs (90%)
The Academic Coordinator is responsible for the following aspects of the MCB major lab courses:
- Program planning and development: The AC will consult with instructors and staff on an quarterly basis to identify areas in the curriculum that require improvement or further development. This will inform their plan to develop, test, update and implement lab modules in the lab courses. Where appropriate, lab modules will be designed into CUREs for implementation by faculty.
- Lab course infrastructure: The AC will serve as a liaison between the staff, teaching assistants (TAs), instructors, the Management Services Officer (MSO), Chair and Vice Chair of Instruction. The AC will assist in: the operation, instruction and maintenance of equipment; the preparation of experiments; inventory, stocking and organization of teaching labs; as needed, train first time TAs in the detailed running of the lab sections so they are prepared to provide quality instruction.
- Evaluation and assessment of lab courses and academic program: The AC will monitor lab courses and sections for consistency in teaching objectives, coverage of material and level of difficulty in completing tasks. On an annual basis and in consultation with instructors, the AC will design program level assessments to monitor how well lab courses meet the broader learning objectives of the majors.
- Development of proposal for extramural funding: The AC will work independently and with instructors to identify lab activities that would benefit from support resources. The AC will work independently or collaboratively with instructors to develop grant proposals to support the teaching lab goals. II. Professional Competence and Activity (5%) The academic coordinator will participate in professional and service activities as needed, including attending conferences. III. Unversity and Public Service (5%) The Academic Coordinator will participate in the administration of their units and the University through appropriate roles in governance and policy formulation . The Academic Coordinator will participate in service activities on UC Davis committees. In addition, they may represent the University in their special capacity as scholars during the discharge of their responsibilities .

Master of Science in biological sciences with an experimental emphasis.
Demonstrated experience in designing and administering a biology-oriented laboratory program for undergraduate student research projects (e.g., CUREs), including but not limited to experience in resource allocation, scheduling and working with graduate student researchers.
Desired experience in developing teaching plans with detailed learning objectives connected to experiential learning lab projects in the areas of biochemistry and molecular biology, genetics and genomics and/or cell biology.
Desired experience supervising others in developing projects and in using state-of-the art digital communication and management tools, such as Slack, MS OneNote or Teams.
PhD or equivalent in the biological sciences with an experimental emphasis.
