Position description

Full-time Research Assistant Position
Psychology Department, University of California, Davis

Dr. Camelia Hostinar in the Psychology Department at the University of California, Davis seek to fill a full-time research assistant position at the Junior Specialist level beginning as soon as August 1, 2021. The position will have duration of 1 year. The successful candidate will work on research projects investigating stress psychobiology.

The research assistant will have the opportunity to acquire and train in several important research and intellectual skills using a variety of psychological tools, as well as perform lab management duties.

Responsibilities
Research (80%)

  • Assisting with data collection with child participants and their parents (e.g., preparing paper-and-pencil questionnaires, collecting saliva samples; taking height, weight and blood pressure readings; processing serum samples from whole blood collected by the phlebotomist). The position involves direct interaction with children and families.
  • Recruiting and scheduling research participants by phone.
  • Leading community outreach efforts to promote the recruitment of participants.
  • Maintaining human subject protocols and consent forms and communicating with the IRB.
  • Contributing to peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts in the form of relevant literature review, data analysis, and scientific write-up. There will be opportunities to publish abstracts and present scientific results at local and national conferences.

University and Public Service (20%)

  • Provide training and oversight to undergraduate research assistants and volunteers.
  • Purchasing laboratory supplies and maintaining a clean, well-organized laboratory environment.
  • Ordering supplies and maintaining laboratory equipment (e.g., freezer, eyewash station).

Position qualifications
Required:

  • A bachelor's degree in the arts or sciences or a health-related field.
  • Prior experience conducting psychological research with children and adolescents.
  • Previous experience with data analysis and stress research.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and good writing skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficiency in computer skills (Microsoft Excel & Word, Google Calendar, Google Voicemail).

Desired:

  • Exposure to some analytical software including SPSS and R.
  • Experience with UC Davis Institutional Review Board (IRB) approved protocols.
