Position description

Junior Specialist – Nephrology Division

The position of Junior Specialist has a narrow focus in a specialized area and provides technical or specialized expertise (e.g., with instrumentation and research equipment, or with research methods) in the planning and execution of a research project. Junior Specialists are required to be actively and significantly involved in publishable research activities, including reviewing journal articles and engaging in discussions on research and the interpretation of research
results. Junior Specialists are also expected to participate in appropriate professional/technical societies or groups and other educational and research organizations as well as review research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications as applicable related to their research
area of expertise.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DESIGNATED AREAS OF EXPERTISE
A. RESEARCH IN SPECIALIZED AREAS-- 90%
Work under the direction of the Principle Investigator on research projects. Collaborate with personnel affiliated with research activities involving bench to bedside translational research methods. In particular, the position involves working on clinical trials, targeting improved metabolism and physical functioning in persons living with kidney disease and diabetes. This position will be working with a project scientist experienced in human sample collection, processing, and analysis. Also, this position involves performing high resolution respirometry on
human tissue and blood cells. Previous experience with lab work is preferable. Evaluation of performance in research activities is subject to the applicable individual project in specialized areas, as documented by any of the following:
􀁸Publications that acknowledge the Junior Specialist's significant and meaningful
contribution to the work.
􀁸Publications on which the Junior Specialist is an author.
􀁸Other evidence (e.g., letters from collaborators or principal investigators) that work done by the Junior Specialist contributed to publishable research.

PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY-- 5%
􀁸Participate in appropriate professional/technical societies or groups and other
educational and research organizations.
􀁸Review research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications related to area of expertise.

UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE-- 5%
May maintain liaison and respond to the needs of various industry organizations, state and federal agencies, and other external groups on issues related to area of expertise.
􀁸Participate in activities of committees within the department, college, campus and other University entities, as appropriate.

Salary: Step I - $42,300

Short-term 2-year maximum Non-Exempt appointment, seasonal appointment based on the needs of the research project. Appointments may be made up to 100%.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Bachelor in biology or in a related field is required and must have been awarded prior to actual hiring date.

Preferred qualifications (other preferred, but not required, qualifications for the position)

Some classroom experience in laboratory, and/or field research is strongly preferred including conducting biomedical research and handling research specimen. Knowledge of HIPPA, biomedical ethical issues, and writing human subject protocols in conducting human research is also preferred. Strong oral and written communication skills required. Knowledge and experience in conducting basic laboratory procedures and bioinformatics are highly desirable.
