Position description

Within UC Davis, the Division of Continuing and Professional Education (CPE) is a $40M self-supporting academic division reporting to the Provost. The CPE team includes 180 academic and professional staff who collectively serve 60,000 learners from all 50 states and more than 100 countries each year. As the lifelong learning arm of the campus, CPE has one of the university’s most extensive educational portfolios, offering academic and non-credit professional certificates, on-campus programs for international students, contract programs for government and corporate clients, conferences, and boot camps in a wide array of topical areas. CPE plays a critical role in advancing the university’s outreach mission in service of non-traditional adult learners and serves as an innovation hub to pioneer new models that may be scaled across the campus.

UC Davis CPE is the administrative home of the highly acclaimed and well-established M.S. in Forensics Sciences offered by the Forensics Sciences Graduate Group (FSGG) at UC Davis. The Academic Administrator will support the FSGG and develop a continuing education program in Forensic Science for various professionals.

Academic administrators are academic appointees who administer programs that provide service closely related to the teaching and research mission of the University. The duties of an academic administrator are largely administrative, although teaching and research responsibilities can also be assigned. The academic administrator oversees complex units with a substantial amount of independence and works closely with campus and professional faculty, as well as the graduate group, campus academic departments and the Graduate Council.

A. Administration/Management of Programs (50%)
The Academic Administrator for the forensic science program will report directly to the Chair of the Center for Professional Studies of UC Davis CPE, and ultimately to the Dean of UC Davis Extension. The position will also work closely with the FSGG Chair and members of FSGG, whose mission is to provide research-based M.S. degrees in the forensic sciences (MSFS). The Academic Administrator is expected to administer the logistical aspects of the MSFS program and provide support to the FSGG chair, the FSGG elected committee members and the group’s graduate advisers in support of the mission of the FSGG. The Academic Administrator is expected to implement and carry out the directive of the FSGG and its committees. These duties will involve administrative management of the support staff assigned to the forensic science program; budget planning, forecasting, allocation and prioritization of program expenses; allocation of physical space, labs and classrooms; selecting, hiring and mentoring instructors; facility planning, and laboratory safety compliance issues; and ensuring a high-quality student environment and experience, including managing the admissions process in concert with the FSGG. The position will also require the incumbent to develop memoranda of understanding with various campus departments in support of the FSGG objectives and the MSFS program. The academic administrator will support the FSGG admissions committee by providing candidate packages that facilitate the committee’s deliberative process.

The Academic Administrator is responsible for the maintenance and allocation of funds in the research reserve and the allocation of these funds to the various campus major professors who are supporting the research effort of the students in the MSFS program. The Academic Administrator is responsible for budgeting and financial management of the forensic sciences program and will work with the Chair and Dean to ensure the program meets its self-supporting objectives as part of UC Davis Extension, as well as fulfill the financial needs of the FSGG. The Academic Administrator should become familiar with current forensic science accreditation programs, such as FEPAC (Forensic Science Education Programs Accreditation Commission) and be prepared to discuss the suitability of such accreditation with the FSGG.

B. Professional Competence (30%)
The Academic Administrator will be responsible for soliciting grants for the forensic science program and will assist the major professors in the FSGG in obtaining forensic science related grants that support the students in the MSFS program. The position will require the submission of periodic grant reports and as needed, the final report to the granting agency. Other duties will include periodic service on MSFS thesis committees if such services will support the major professor, serving as the principal investigator of original research from CPE, and supervising students in a laboratory or research program sponsored by CPE. The Academic Administrator will participate in campus activities relevant to the MSFS program and prepare documents for the five-year graduate council program review and other reports required by campus. The Academic Administrator will schedule and monitor the courses in the MSFS program, become familiar with the various UC Davis course management systems, and ensure that all the instructors in the program are familiar with these systems. The Academic Administrator will also provide recommendations for changes and additions to the FSGG education policy committee and carry out the decision of the committee.

The Academic Administrator may also be asked to provide guest lectures in forensic science courses or for other UC Davis departments and classes and may instruct in one or more of the courses in areas relevant to his/her expertise in forensic science. The Academic Administrator is responsible for conducting and scheduling the speakers for the MSFS seminar series. The position also requires soliciting and identifying research projects for MSFS students by identifying suitable projects, meeting with the members of FSGG and with other campus professors who may have relevant forensic science projects for the MSFS student. A key duty will be the development of master’s level research projects for the MSFS program students. As such, the Academic Administrator is expected to be involved with other campus and public entities in the identification of suitable M.S. level research efforts.

C. University and Public Service (10%)
The Academic Administrator will be the public figure for the MSFS program and will interact with the local, state, and national forensic science community. The duties will require attendance and participation with the relevant forensic science professional associations, support of joint UC Davis professional association seminars, preparing MSFS students for seminar presentations and presenting scientific papers at various seminars as needed. Other duties will include the solicitation for grants for the MSFS program and obtaining analytical equipment relevant to the needs of the MSFS program. The Academic Administrator is expected to become a visible part of the forensic science community. This includes participation in, or becoming a member of, such organizations as the American Academy of Forensic Science, The California Association of Criminalists, and the California Association of Crime Lab Directors.

D. Personnel Management and Human Resources (10%)
The Academic Administrator will directly supervise office staff and student workers in the forensic science program and will also be responsible for recruiting and hiring instructors and specialists necessary for program success. These tasks will entail understanding of and adherence to University of California employment practices, as well as processes and procedures of UC Davis CPE’s Human Resources unit. This area includes identifying staff needs, recruiting and hiring staff, mentoring, and working with staff members and students and ensuring a professional working environment in the program.

This is a full-time academic term appointment with an initial 1-year appointment, eligible for continued reappointment. Salary and Rank (III, IV, V or VI) commensurate with experience. UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education is unable to sponsor a work visa (H-1B) to fill this position. Successful candidate must be able to demonstrate that they are legally authorized to work in the United States.

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

    M.S. or equivalent in Forensic Science, Genetics, Toxicology, Bio-chemistry, or related scientific discipline appropriate for forensics lab and analysis work.

    Five years of total experience working in a forensic lab or related research or enforcement organization.

    Management or leadership level experience in an organization related to forensics such as a crime lab, forensics lab or service bureau, investigative bureau, district attorney or prosecutorial office with major forensic capability, or equivalent.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

    In depth knowledge of Forensic Science methods, practices and procedures.

    Knowledge of and experience with the Forensics Science community such as associations (California Association of Criminalists, American Academy of Forensic Science, etc.), crime labs, university-based forensics programs, etc.

    Knowledge of and working experience with developing and managing program and/or project budgeting and budget forecasting.

    Experience with and expertise in science-based research and laboratory-based research.

    Experience and ability to work with a diverse range of individuals, including faculty and working professionals in the forensics arena.

Preferred qualifications

    Ph.D. in a relevant science-based discipline.

    Knowledge and experience in grant-writing

    Knowledge and experience in curriculum development and effective teaching of adult learners.

    Present or past experience in forensic science analysis and testimony in a court of law.

    Active and on-going research in some aspect of forensic science.

    A substantial track record of publications related to forensic science.

    Teaching experience at the undergraduate, graduate and/or professional levels in science-based curriculum either directly or indirectly related to forensic science.

    Experience managing staff members in an organization related to Forensic Science or educational institution.

    Experience advising, mentoring or working with students.

    Knowledge of and experience with relevant laws, procedures, and practices in forensic evidence and proceedings.

    Experience with developing and managing professional and continuing educational programs in forensic science or related fields and disciplines.
