The Department of Plant Sciences is recruiting for a part-time Assistant Project Scientist to provide significant and creative research contributions the walnut high-throughput phenotyping program. The appointee possesses the subject matter expertise and the creative energy necessary to function at a high level of competence. The appointee will participate in activities to increase, improve, or upgrade competency. Appointees with Project (e.g., Scientist) titles may engage in University and public service. They do not have teaching responsibilities. Although the Project Scientist is expected to work independently under the general guidance of an academic member with an independent research program (i.e., Professor, Professional Researcher, Specialist in Cooperative Extension, etc.), he/she is not required to develop an independent research program or reputation. He/she will carry out research or creative programs with supervision by an individual in an academic title that carries with it automatic Principal Investigator status. The Project Scientist does not usually serve as a Principal Investigator but may do so by exception.
I. RESEARCH (95%)
Research activity (65%)
The candidate will be responsible for leading research on high-throughput phenotyping of walnut yield. The objectives are to enhance our ability to rapidly estimate yield of walnut trees for breeding or management purposes. He/she will be responsible for field and laboratory data collection, analysis, and software development.
The candidate will take the responsibility to collect data, annotate results and write publications for peer-reviewed journals in collaboration with the Principal Investigator (PI) and/or other members of the research team.
Grant Acquisition/Renewal/Reporting (5%)
The funding agency for this project requires submission of annual reports and presentation of results at annual meetings, which will be led by the project scientist. The candidate will also lead preparation of grant renewal applications for continued funding.
II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (5%)
The candidate will participate in professional societies and will attend conferences appropriate to his/her specific field. He/she will serve as a reviewer of research proposals and scientific publications within his/her field. He/she will coordinate and/or give presentations at seminars, laboratory meetings or invited lectures. He/she will also present his/her research results and give oral presentations to public and professional interest groups.

a. Candidate must have a PhD in plant biology, agronomy, environmental science, data science, or related field. (Ph.D. must be obtained by time of appointment.)
b. The candidate must have experience (and preferably a publication record) in the field of high-throughput phenotyping.
c. Computer programming experience.
d. Excellent written and oral skills.
e. Theoretical/quantitative background in computer vision, machine learning, or similar field.
f. Candidate needs to have demonstrated computer programming experience with MATLAB/C++/Python languages.
g. Candidate is to show the ability to work effectively in a team.
h. The selected candidate should have a valid U.S. driver’s license.
