Center for Alimentary and Metabolic Science, Specialist Position

The Department of Surgery at the University of California, Davis seeks to hire a full-time employee as an Assistant/Associate/Full Specialist in the newly-launched Center for Alimentary and Metabolic Science (CAMS). In this role, the incumbent will perform research and help coordinate interdisciplinary studies of metabolic physiology using multiple tools including cell and molecular biology, biochemistry and “omics” technologies.

Candidates should have a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. in Biology, Nutrition, Physiology, or other relevant fields relevant to the CAMS research programs. For consideration at the Associate Specialist rank, at least six years of experience in the area of specialization and/or a PhD and/or Master’s plus two to five years in the area of specialization is required. At the Full Specialist rank, at least ten years of experience in the area of specialization is required (the latter may include time spent in post-baccalaureate degree studies, i.e., Master’s and six or more years in the area of specialization or PhD with additional research experience).

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DESIGNATED AREAS OF EXPERTISE:
RESEARCH (70% EFFORT)
This position requires creative contributions to and collaborative development of an active research program investigating topics relevant to the research area of metabolic physiology, including areas focused on diabetes, obesity, exercise and microbiome. For instance, one current lab focus is on characterizing specific metabolites (“xenometabolites”) generated by the gut microbiota. Another study is determining molecular and biochemical phenotypes that associate with healthy vs. unhealthy metabolism in obesity, by analyzing biospecimens derived from the bariatric and metabolic surgery clinic.

The candidate is expected to bring scientific creativity to studies. The candidate will assist in study design, and in collecting and interpreting data. The candidate will be expected to participate in maintaining an orderly lab and shared duties and will work to maintain a collegial and scientifically stimulating culture with the other scientists in the lab, the department and university. The candidate shall serve as a primary point of contact for the laboratory and will assist the PI in the coordination of the PI’s overall research program and the CAMS laboratory operations.

PUBLICATION (20% EFFORT)
The candidate is expected to compile study results in written reports, figures or other materials to be included in scholarly manuscripts for publication and presentations, in collaboration with the PI. The candidate is expected to contribute to the preparation and submission of laboratory and CAMS grant applications.

PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (10% EFFORT)
The candidate will participate in professional societies and conferences appropriate to his/her specific field of metabolic science and may serve as a reviewer of research proposals and scientific publications as appropriate. The candidate will attend relevant university and extramural seminars and workshops. When appropriate, the candidate may coordinate and/or give presentations at seminars, laboratory meetings or educational functions.

POSTIONS AVAILABLE: 1 position

TERM OF APPOINTMENT: Full-Time (100%) appointment. Initial appointment is for 12 months; reappointment is pending satisfactory performance, needs of the research project, and sufficient funding.
