Position description

The Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of California, Davis invites applications for one Assistant Project Scientist in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Research (85%):
The position will focus on elucidating how nuclei enable cells to sense and respond to mechanical stimuli (i.e. mechanotransduction). More specifically, the candidate will study how LINC complexes are assembled within the nuclear envelope, how they organize the nucleoplasm (e.g. chromatin and nucleoli), and how they control the mechanical properties of cells in vitro and in vivo. The candidate will design and perform experiments using a suite of advanced biophysical, cell biological, high-throughput screening, and quantitative imaging. This position requires a strong background in CRISPR/cas9-mediated genome editing, lentivirus-mediated cell transduction, mammalian tissue culture, and nuclear cell biology to successfully execute these experiments. Candidates must have demonstrated success in using CRISPR/cas9 to edit mammalian tissue culture cells.
The successful applicant will be responsible for performing publication-quality experiments aimed at studying the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the regulated assembly nuclear envelope proteins in cells. Approaches include plasmid cloning, development of CRISPR cell lines, forward CRISPR screens in tissue culture, quantitative microscopy, AI software for image processing, and nuclear polarization assays in tissue cultured fibroblasts.

Professional Competence (8%):
The applicant must have experience with writing manuscripts. They will prepare figures and text for grants and manuscripts. They will also prepare figures for presentations and annual reports to granting agencies. They will also edit and critique papers and grants from others in the lab.

University and Public Service (7%):
Attend 1-2 conferences per year to present our lab’s findings to the scientific community. The applicant will train younger postdocs, graduate students, and undergraduates in tissue culture and CRISPR techniques in the lab. The candidate must be able to lead a small team, teach others, and work in small groups.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants will have a Ph.D. degree and at least five years of postdoctoral training in molecular biology or a related field with laboratory research experience using CRISPR/Cas9 to edit the genomes of mammalian tissue culture cells. They must also have experience with general cloning and molecular biology skills. The candidate should have a track record demonstrating their interests in the molecular and cell biology of the nucleus. It is essential that all applicants be able to keep a complete and detailed laboratory notebook (digital or analog) of experimental procedures and data to archive, label and document data for publication, proposals and presentations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Scientific training and skill equivalent to five years post-doctoral experience in molecular biology, and nuclear cell biology.
Expertise in mammalian tissue cell culture and CRISPR/Cas9-mediated genome editing.
Experience with molecular biology techniques including DNA extraction, DNA sequencing, electrophoresis, lentiviral transduction, PCR, site-directed mutagenesis, and transformations.
Experience with record keeping and data storage.
Experience with Adobe Illustrator, ImageJ, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel or equivalents.
At least 5 years of experience as a postdoctoral researcher in the field of nuclear cell biology

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience writing and editing manuscripts.
Experience mentoring graduate students and undergraduate students.
Experience with quantitative microscopy.

SALARY RANGE: Step I-VI $63,100-$81,200 [100% annual], commensurate with qualifications and experience

TERM OF APPOINTMENT: Appointments may be made up to 100%.
