Position description

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California, Davis invites applications from qualified candidates for one or more Project Scientist positions. We aim to recruit an outstanding individual with the appropriate background and/or experience capable of interacting with our many collaborators. Candidates should have a PhD in engineering, the physical sciences, or related field. A broad range of skills in plasma physics and millimeter wave techniques/instrumentation, good interpersonal and organization skills, and strong communication (oral and written) skills are required. Candidates should have 1-3 years of post-PhD experience. The job site will be at General Atomics in San Diego California. Project Scientists work under the direction of a faculty Principal Investigator.
The Project Scientist is evaluated for merit and promotion based on evidence of contribution to the research program, authorship in peer-reviewed publications and conference papers, active dissemination of information and other evidence of expertise. The Project Scientist will maintain professional competence and perform both University and Public service. This position requires creative contributions to, and collaborative participation in, an active research program investigating topics relevant to the research areas of visualization plasma diagnostics, micro-turbulence, Edge Localized Mode dynamics and synthetic diagnostics simulation. This position specializes in research of pedestal plasma confinement optimization, ELM suppression, and multi-field measurements. Demonstrated skills in one or more aspects of diagnostics data interpretation, synthetic diagnostics simulation, and multi-field coherence analysis are highly desirable.
The position is funded by multiple extramural grants addressing topics related to fusion plasma physics, multi-field physics, System-on-Chip diagnostics development, imaging optics design and deployment, and millimeter wave instrument development. It is anticipated that approximately 70-90% of the time will be spent designing and implementing original research experiments, assisting in the creation of new grant applications, and writing original manuscripts. The remaining 10-30% of the time will be devoted to the organization and management of the lab, which will include participation in the daily activities of the lab including maintenance of equipment, and training of other researchers (e.g., graduate students) in the scientific method as well as millimeter wave instrumentation techniques (e.g., network analysis).
