Position description

Dr. Stephen McSorley at the Center for Immunology and Infectious Diseases of the University of California, Davis (https://ciid.ucdavis.edu/people/stephen-mcsorley) seeks to fill a full-time research assistant position at the Junior Specialist level starting 2021. Preferred start date is May 1. This is a 1-year position with the possibility of renewal depending on grant funding.
90% Research
The work to be conducted is part of a project to develop greater understanding of the immune response to bacterial infections. The appointment will involve in vitro and in vivo analysis of immune cells by multicolor flow cytometry. The Junior Specialist will be responsible for setting up tissue culture assays, mouse handling and immunization, preparation of cells and mouse tissues for flow cytometric analysis, data collection and data analysis. Responsibilities will also include the generation and testing of laboratory reagents, refinement of laboratory protocols, and protocol troubleshooting. The Junior Specialist will be expected to be actively involved in the research activities of the laboratory, including reviewing the literature in the area of study, engaging in discussions with the research team, analyzing and interpreting research results, helping write research reports and articles as well as general lab duties. The Junior Specialist may also prepare research presentations (e.g., poster presentations) and participate in laboratory and research meetings. The Junior Specialist will be highly organized and detail-oriented, willing to learn and apply what is learned to their work, able to trouble-shoot experiments, and will also have strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills, as well as the ability to work well independently and as part of a team.

When appropriate, the candidate may coordinate and give presentations at seminars, laboratory meetings, or other professional meetings.
5% University and Public Service
The candidate will engage in University Service activities such as Center committee service. Teaching is not an expectation of this position.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Immunology, or a related field
Some previous laboratory work experience
Demonstrated experience, or willingness to learn, data analysis using Flow Jo software
Ability to generate summary Excel spreadsheet tables and data summaries
Ability to occasionally work evenings and weekend hours when required for data collection.

The position is ideally suited for a person who is interested in gaining research experience before applying to graduate school. Prior experience with tissue sample processing and flow cytometry, would be advantageous, but is not required.
